A powerful new SUV that travels 1,300 km (808 miles) on a single charge has arrived. Thanks to a hybrid powertrain, it’s bigger than the BMW X7 and more fuel-efficient than the Genesis GV80.

The spotlight is on Denza’s latest model, the N9 — a premium SUV from BYD that combines the advantages of electric and internal combustion engines.

Unveiled first in China, this ultra-large SUV redefines luxury benchmarks and is aimed at the global market.

Imposing Size and Premium Interior

The N9 draws attention with its size. It is 5,258 mm (207 inches) long, 2,030 mm (79.9 inches) wide, and 1,830 mm (72 inches) high—longer and wider than the BMW X7. A 3,125 mm (123 inches) wheelbase provides generous cabin space.

Exterior features include a bold front bumper, unique taillights, and pop-up door handles. Side mirrors are replaced with cameras, and retractable running boards add a futuristic touch.

Three large digital displays, a head-up display (HUD), and a ceiling-mounted screen provide an immersive experience. Luxury features include a sliding refrigerator, a panoramic sunroof, and individual second-row seats.

Supercar-level performance, EV-like efficiency

The N9 stands out with its performance. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with three electric motors produces a total system output of 680 kW (912 horsepower), an exceptional figure for an SUV.

The hybrid system delivers a combined fuel efficiency of 15.8 km/L (37.1 mpg), which is impressive for a full-size SUV. Its battery capacity is approximately 47 kWh, allowing for up to 200 km (124 miles) of electric-only driving.

This means the N9 can operate like an EV in urban settings while maximizing hybrid efficiency on long trips. A full tank offers a total driving range of up to 1,300 km (808 miles).

Global strategy to challenge BMW, Mercedes

Denza is positioning the N9 for the Chinese and international markets. BYD recently confirmed plans to expand Denza’s presence in Europe, with the N9 at the forefront.

The vehicle made headlines when uncamouflaged test drives were spotted in London, signaling Denza’s intent to challenge established brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi.

The N9 plug-in hybrid is priced between 389,800 CNY and 449,800 CNY (approximately $53,000 and $62,000) in China.

The global auto industry is watching to see if BYD’s Denza can disrupt the European luxury SUV segment.
