Volvo recently revealed the China-specific variant of its compact electric SUV, the EX30 Cross Country, through official images released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The EX30 made headlines last year as Volvo’s first small electric SUV, quickly becoming Europe’s second-best-selling EV with approximately 98,065 units sold. Volvo is expanding the EX30 lineup with a rugged Cross Country version aimed at customers seeking urban style and outdoor capability.

First Pure-Electric Cross Country

Following the tradition of its successful V60 and V90 Cross Country models, Volvo’s new EX30 Cross Country is the automaker’s first fully electric variant within this off-road-inspired range.

Designed explicitly for off-road adventures, the EX30 Cross Country features increased ground clearance and more brutal exterior styling. Equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, this vehicle promises stable performance even on challenging terrain.

Distinctive Off-road Styling

The EX30 Cross Country sports classic cross-country styling cues, including protective cladding around the wheel arches, reinforced front, side, and rear skid plates, and signature black panel accents on the bumpers and trunk.

Dimensionally, the EX30 Cross Country measures 4,233 mm (166.6 inches) long, 1,850 mm (72.8 inches) wide, 1,573 mm (61.9 inches) high, and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm (104.3 inches). Compared to the standard EX30, this Cross Country version is 12 mm wider and 18 mm taller—modifications designed to enhance off-road stability and capability.

Standard equipment includes rugged 19-inch black wheels, with optional 18-inch wheels and specialized off-road tires available for buyers looking to maximize capability on challenging surfaces.

Despite being the smallest model in Volvo’s Cross Country range, the EX30 Cross Country retains all essential off-road features. Its raised ride height helps protect the vehicle’s underbody from uneven surfaces, while the protective exterior cladding shields the bodywork from debris and impacts.

Dual-Motor AWD for Robust Performance

The EX30 Cross Country employs a dual-motor AWD system engineered for demanding off-road driving. Its front electric motor generates 115 kW (approximately 154 horsepower), complemented by a rear motor producing 200 kW (around 268 horsepower). Combined, these motors deliver significant power to tackle various terrains confidently.

Though precise battery specifications have yet to be disclosed, industry sources indicate the EX30 Cross Country will feature a ternary lithium battery. Detailed specifications will be announced later, including exact battery capacity, expected driving range, and interior amenities.

Given its positioning as Volvo’s first fully electric cross-country model, the EX30 cross-country is also likely to offer specialized driving modes and terrain response features optimized for off-road conditions.

Appealing to Urban Adventurers

By blending Volvo’s clean, modern aesthetics with serious off-road capabilities, the EX30 Cross Country is expected to attract consumers who enjoy city driving and outdoor activities.

Pricing in China is anticipated to start at roughly 200,000 CNY (approximately $27,540), placing it close to the standard EX30. The global market launch is set for this summer.
