2,000-Kilometer Range? VW’s New Phaeton Wants to Blow Your Mind

A decade after discontinuing it, Volkswagen returned its flagship sedan, the Phaeton. This time, it was developed with updated performance and technology to compete in the premium electric vehicle (EV) market.

The new Phaeton, which is expected to achieve up to 2,000 km (1,243 miles) of range on a single charge, is currently being developed as an EV and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Volkswagen aims to launch the model in 2026.

Industry observers watch closely to see whether the vehicle can compete effectively with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Tesla Model S and influence the luxury electric sedan segment.

The new Phaeton is the successor to Volkswagen’s original Phaeton, which was produced from 2002 to 2016. While the previous Phaeton shared a platform with the Bentley Continental and boasted high technical prowess, it struggled to overcome brand image limitations and market positioning challenges. It sold only about 84,000 units before being discontinued.

However, Volkswagen claims this new Phaeton will be different, offering two powertrain options: a pure EV and a PHEV. The EV version will feature Volkswagen’s proprietary Quantum Drive System, aiming for a maximum WLTP-rated range of 2,000 km (1,243 miles) on a single charge, thanks to solid-state battery technology.

The new Phaeton will be a full-size sedan measuring 5,300 mm (208.7 inches) long, 1,950 mm (76.8 inches) wide, and 1,460 mm (57.5 inches) high. It will be available exclusively in a long-wheelbase configuration. While maintaining a classic three-box design, the car will incorporate Automatically Adaptive Aerodynamics (AAA) to minimize air resistance during high-speed driving.

The interior will feature adaptive comfort seats with biometric sensors that monitor occupants’ conditions in real time and can activate massage functions when needed.

Additionally, the Phaeton is expected to feature advanced features like an augmented reality head-up display and an infotainment system with holographic haptic technology.

An automotive industry insider commented that the new Phaeton is expected to be more than just a vehicle; it will serve as a flagship platform showcasing Volkswagen’s technological capabilities and has the potential to set new expectations for luxury sedans.

A Potential Game-Changer in the EV Market

The Phaeton’s revival is more than just a new model launch; it represents Volkswagen’s strategy to strengthen its position in the premium EV segment, going head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Tesla Model S.

The powertrain lineup is impressive. The PHEV model will have a 4.0-liter V8 engine, which is also used in Lamborghini and Porsche vehicles, while the EV model is expected to deliver more than 900 horsepower.

The Volkswagen Group’s board chairman recently emphasized that the Phaeton’s revival is not just a comeback but a statement of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design.

With the official launch still set for 2026, both industry insiders and consumers are already watching closely in anticipation of the arrival of a true luxury EV.

As the automotive world looks ahead, this new model could redefine what luxury EVs represent—far beyond being just a comeback.
