Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is again shaking up the market with the debut of its new e7 electric sedan. Positioned as a more affordable counterpart to its premium Seal lineup, the e7 offers a compelling blend of driving range, practicality, and price. With an estimated starting price of around 18 million KRW (approximately $14,000), it undercuts the Seal by nearly half while still delivering up to 520 kilometers (323 miles) of range on a single charge.

The BYD e7 is a mid-size electric sedan that balances practicality and affordability.

The vehicle is 4,780 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,515 mm high. Its dimensions closely resemble the Seal, which has a 2,820 mm wheelbase.

A standout feature is its curb weight, available in 1,499 kg (3,305 lbs) and 1,566 kg (3,452 lbs) variants. This contributes to greater range and cost efficiency.

The exterior features a sleek, aerodynamic profile. However, to keep costs down, the e7 uses traditional door handles and 16-inch wheels, opting for function over luxury.

323-Mile Range and Blade Battery Technology

The BYD e7 offers two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options: 48 kWh and 57.6 kWh. Based on the CLTC standard, these provide estimated driving ranges of 450 km (280 miles) and 520 km (323 miles), respectively—sufficient for daily urban commutes and longer-distance travel.

The vehicle has a single 100 kW (134 hp) electric motor and reaches a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph), making it competitive in its segment.

Another major draw is BYD’s Blade Battery technology, which is known for its durability and safety and adds to the vehicle’s appeal.

Targeting Fleets: Taxi and Ride-Hailing Applications

BYD seems to target the taxi and ride-hailing markets with the e7, following the commercial success of its predecessor, the e5.

An industry analyst noted that as EV price competition intensifies in China, BYD offers a cost-effective, practical model for fleet customers. The price of approximately $13,500 could generate interest in international markets.

The e7 is expected to be a game-changer in the EV market. With its impressive driving range, dependable performance, and aggressive pricing, BYD’s latest release is seen not just as a new model launch but as a signal of a broader shift in direction for the global EV industry.
