A notable new extended-range electric minivan is turning heads in China, offering exceptional value and efficiency. The Wuling Hongguang EREV, produced by General Motors’ Chinese joint venture SGMW, combines an electric powertrain’s efficiency with gasoline-powered convenience. The vehicle promises a driving range of up to 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single fuel tank and battery charge—remarkable performance for a starting price of just around $9,300.

The Chinese automotive market continues to grow rapidly in electric vehicle offerings, yet few models match this balance of affordability, range, and interior versatility. The Hongguang EREV minivan targets diverse market segments, from delivery services and business transportation to larger family households.

Compact Yet Spacious, Optimized for Practicality

Dimensionally, the Wuling Hongguang EREV measures approximately 177.8 inches (4,515 mm) in length, 67.9 inches (1,725 mm) in width, and 70.5 inches (1,790 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 112.2 inches (2,850 mm). Although slightly smaller than vehicles like the Hyundai Staria, it is offered in both five-seat and seven-seat layouts, adequately serving both commercial needs and family-oriented customers.

Visually, the vehicle adopts a minimalist aesthetic. Its front end features a slanted hood and grille-free design, improving aerodynamic efficiency. This design choice contributes to an impressively low drag coefficient of just 0.32 Cd, helping maximize overall efficiency and fuel economy.

EREV Powertrain Delivers Efficiency and Extended Range

Under the hood, the Hongguang EREV combines a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a rear-mounted electric motor. Unlike conventional hybrids, the gasoline engine doesn’t directly drive the wheels; instead, it solely functions as a generator to recharge the battery.

The electric motor provides a peak output of 101 horsepower (75 kW) and 180 Nm of torque. Power is sourced from an 8.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, enabling a pure electric range of about 31 miles (50 km). However, in hybrid mode—thanks to its 55-liter fuel tank—the total driving range expands dramatically to approximately 621 miles (1,000 kilometers).

Fuel economy figures further highlight the vehicle’s efficiency credentials. Official Chinese CLTC ratings indicate a combined fuel efficiency of just 2.42 liters per 100 km (approximately 97 mpg). Even after the battery charge is depleted, it maintains an impressive economy rating of around 5.18 liters per 100 km, significantly outperforming most competitors within its segment.

Remarkably Aggressive Pricing for Global Markets

One of the most striking aspects of the Hongguang EREV is its pricing strategy. Entry-level trims begin at 68,800 yuan ($9,355), while fully equipped models cost approximately 73,800 yuan ($10,034). Finding an equivalent seven-seater vehicle worldwide that combines electric-mode driving and a 1,000 km range capability is nearly impossible at these prices.

Basic models sacrifice certain comforts—such as airbags and infotainment displays—but upper trims add essential conveniences. Higher trims feature an 8-inch touchscreen, LED headlights, dual airbags, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Standard equipment includes a sporty D-cut steering wheel, an electronic gear selector, intuitive HVAC controls, and infotainment options.

Potential for Market Expansion Beyond China

The Wuling Hongguang EREV could attract significant interest from cost-conscious small business owners and large families globally, especially those concerned with fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs. Parallel imports or official brand expansion could open the door, but regulatory compatibility will undoubtedly be the decisive factor.
