Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to enter the European market with the Dolphin Surf, an ultra-affordable electric vehicle (EV).
The Dolphin Surf is based on the existing Chinese model, the Seagull, and is currently priced at around $10,000 in China. However, depending on local market conditions, prices may vary once it launches in Europe.
Launch in Europe First

BYD plans to launch the Dolphin Surf in Europe by 2025. Industry experts predict it will debut at under £20,000 (approximately $27,000), making it an attention-grabbing option in the EV space.
This model is designed to challenge Europe’s premium EV offerings. While some adjustments may be needed to meet regional safety standards, its core advantages—competitive pricing and solid battery performance—are expected to remain.
The Dolphin Surf offers two in-house battery options: 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, with estimated ranges of 305 km (189.5 miles) and 405 km (251.7 miles), respectively.
It will also include BYD’s advanced driver assistance system, called God’s Eye, highlighting its capabilities as a practical and well-rounded EV.
Potential Clash with Casper

When the Dolphin Surf arrives, it will likely compete directly with Hyundai’s Casper Electric.

Casper Electric highlights Hyundai’s urban EV strategy. It features efficient space use, solid winter performance with LFP batteries, and better driving dynamics than the Ray EV. It also provides various practical, budget-friendly options.
In contrast, the Dolphin Surf is a surprisingly capable, low-cost EV. With a potential price advantage of over 5 million KRW (approximately $3,500) compared to the Casper, its long range and dedicated EV platform could be key selling points.
Design and Appeal: Lifestyle May Decide

Each model brings its own design strengths. The Casper features a clean, modern design that aligns with its urban EV purpose. Recent taillight graphics and bumper styling updates have further improved its visual appeal.
New 16- and 17-inch wheel options are also available for drivers seeking a more personalized look.

The Dolphin Surf is expected to offer a more experimental and standout design based on the unique silhouette of the Seagull. It may appeal particularly to younger drivers and trend-conscious buyers.
Its EV-specific platform could also offer advantages in interior layout and driving experience.
Affordability vs. Technology: Who Will Come Out on Top?

Today’s EV buyers look beyond price, focusing on overall value, including performance, design, range, and brand reputation.
If the BYD Dolphin Surf enters the market, its competition with the Hyundai Casper Electric could energize the local compact EV market, giving consumers more affordable and innovative choices.
