The MG4, an electric vehicle that gained attention in Europe in 2022, is returning with a complete redesign.

The new version addresses its earlier shortcomings, with significant upgrades in design, interior space, and driving performance.

As competition intensifies in the EV market, MG is positioning this model to strengthen its presence as a global brand.

The MG4, an electric hatchback introduced after SAIC acquired the British brand MG, found unexpected success in Europe in 2022. However, it faced challenges in its domestic market, China.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), MG4 sales fell by 95% in January and February, with just 36 units sold.

The decline was due to an outdated design and uncompetitive pricing. At. It failed to appeal to Chinese consumers at 139,800 CNY (approximately $20,000).

These factors pushed the MG4 out of contention in its home market.

Learning from past mistakes, MG has essentially created a brand-new vehicle. The redesigned MG4 EV is now 4,395 mm (173 inches) long, 108 mm (4.25 inches) longer than the previous version, and features a 2,750 mm (108.3 inches) wheelbase, extended by 45 mm (1.8 inches), providing noticeably more interior space.

The design language has shifted from sharp lines to smoother curves. The front end features a sporty bumper, LED headlights, and a trapezoidal air intake.

Defined fender lines create a strong side profile, while conventional door handles enhance practicality.

The rear showcases a sophisticated look with an integrated roof spoiler brake light and arrow-shaped LED taillights, complemented by independent suspension for improved handling.

Tweaked Performance with Global Ambitions

The new MG4 EV has a 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor, slightly lower than the previous base model’s 125 kW, but it maintains a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph).

It uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Chinese manufacturer Rept Battery Energy. Detailed battery specs have yet to be disclosed.

Industry observers speculate that a high-performance successor to the dual-motor X-Power variant may be in the works, part of MG’s broader plan to expand its global appeal.

MG plans to debut the new MG4 EV at the Shanghai Motor Show in April. Its European release is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.
