Mercedes-Benz has begun testing the EQS sedan with the world’s first all-solid-state battery on actual roads. This revolutionary battery technology is a “game changer” for the electric vehicle (EV) market, offering improved safety and efficiency over conventional lithium-ion batteries. The central question now is whether Mercedes-Benz can redefine the future of electric mobility with this breakthrough.

Why All-Solid-State Batteries Are Innovative

The solid-state battery in the EQS sedan offers significant advantages over current lithium-ion batteries. Using a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one, this new technology increases the energy density to 450 Wh/kg, 25% more driving range than lithium-ion batteries of the same size and weight.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has incorporated a pneumatic actuator and “floating cell carrier” technology to address the volume changes that solid-state batteries experience during charging and discharging. This innovation enhances battery stability, extends lifespan, and reduces the fire risk associated with traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Current State of Mercedes-Benz’s Battery Development

Mercedes-Benz is developing these solid-state batteries in collaboration with U.S. battery startup Factorial Energy and the UK’s AMG High-Performance Powertrain division. Factorial Energy has already supplied battery cells with an energy density of 391 Wh/kg and a charging capacity exceeding 106 Ah.

Markus Schaefer, Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer, stated, “Solid-state batteries are a technology that will set new standards for the automotive industry.” He added that the company will continue researching and developing sustainable, innovative electric vehicles.

Impact on the Electric Vehicle Market

Research and development of all-solid-state batteries is accelerating globally, with major automakers like Hyundai, Toyota, and Stellantis also exploring this technology. If Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing testing yields positive results, it could fast-track the commercialization of these batteries.

Mercedes plans to stay ahead in the electric vehicle market by incorporating all-solid-state batteries into mass-produced vehicles by 2030. This technology could significantly reduce the gap between electric and internal combustion engine vehicles by improving charging time and driving range, two of the primary limitations of current EVs.

The EQS prototype will undergo real-world testing in various driving conditions in the coming months. The automotive world eagerly awaits how Mercedes’ electric vehicles with all-solid-state batteries will shape the future of EV technology.
