Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture between Sony and Honda, has officially opened pre-orders for the Afeela 1, the first electric vehicle (EV) developed by the collaboration. Pre-orders are initially limited to California residents, and a $200 deposit is required to secure a spot on the waiting list. The launch has generated significant excitement, as this vehicle combines Honda’s vehicle technology with Sony’s expertise in image sensors and entertainment.

From Concept to Reality: A Five-Year Journey
Sony first unveiled its plans for an EV at CES 2020, aiming to develop a car that would showcase its strengths in software, entertainment, and sensors. Partnering with Honda, the Afeela project was born, with a planned launch for 2026. Now, ahead of CES 2025, Sony Honda Mobility has revealed more specific details about the Afeela 1, including the pricing and trim levels. The base trim costs $89,900, while the high-end Signature trim will retail for $102,900.

Powertrain and Performance: A New Standard for EVs
The powertrain adopts a four-wheel drive system with electric motors on the front and rear wheels. It generates a maximum output of 483 horsepower and supports a 91 kWh lithium-ion battery and 150 kW DC fast charging. According to EPA standards, the maximum driving distance on a full charge is approximately 482 km (300 miles). This is a driving performance befitting an EV that combines new technologies.
The body size of the Afeela 1 is 4,915 mm (193.5 inches) in length, 1,900 mm (74.8 inches) in width, 1,460 mm (57.5 inches) in height, and 3,000 mm (118.1 inches) in wheelbase. The only exterior color currently available is Core Black. According to what has been revealed, the exterior emphasizes futuristic design elements.

Innovative Technology Powered by Sony
Sony Honda Mobility has incorporated innovative technologies into the Afeela 1, most notably the Afeela Personal Agent. This technology leverages Sony’s entertainment and software expertise, allowing users to interact with the vehicle via a mobile phone. During demonstrations, the Personal Agent function showcased the car’s ability to move forward and backward autonomously.
The Afeela 1 has 45 sensors for driver assistance, enabling advanced autonomous driving capabilities. The base and Signature trims will have a three-year free subscription to Level 2+ driver assistance functions, including an AI-based personal assistant. The Signature trim, available in 2026, will feature enhanced capabilities, while the base trim will be delivered in 2027.
