Toyota Just Proved It Can Beat Tesla—At Least in China

Toyota’s electric SUV, the bZ3X, has gained strong momentum in China, surpassing 10,000 units sold within its first month. Demand remains high, with over 12,000 more orders pending.

Toyota’s bZ3X, built on the e-TNGA platform, enters the market at around 11,250 USD. The base model offers a 50.03 kWh battery with a CLTC-rated range of 430 km (267 miles), while the premium variant extends up to 610 km (379 miles) with a 67.92 kWh battery.

The bZ3X caters to tech-savvy drivers with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch digital cluster. It also features Momenta’s 5.0 intelligent driving system, enabling Level 2+ driver assistance.

Toyota partnered with GAC Group to develop the bZ3X, adopting a localized strategy to better align with Chinese consumer demands. This marks a shift from Toyota’s usual global approach, aiming to strengthen its foothold in the world’s largest auto market.

The bZ3X’s swift success highlights Toyota’s grasp of Chinese consumer needs and its focus on innovation through Momenta’s advanced driver assistance tech. This winning strategy may shape Toyota’s future EV roadmap in global markets.

To sustain momentum, Toyota must uphold quality and advance its tech offerings. Replicating this success globally will require careful adaptation to regional differences and consumer expectations.
