Tesla’s Entry-Level EV: Familiar Form, Lower Price

Tesla’s upcoming affordable electric vehicle is expected to be a streamlined version of the Model 3 and Model Y, not a new model, according to a report by InsideEVs on Wednesday.

During Tesla’s recent Q1 earnings call, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy stated the new lower-cost model will share structural similarities with current vehicles. It will incorporate elements from both next-generation and existing platforms and be manufactured on the same production lines.

Moravy tempered expectations for the budget-friendly EV, noting constraints with introducing new vehicle types on existing production lines. He emphasized the model would be competitively priced, similar to how the Model 3 and Model Y improved value through platform upgrades.

These comments have led analysts to speculate that Tesla’s affordable EV will likely be a scaled-down variant of an existing model, not a completely new design.
