Japanese smart mobility startup ICOMA unveiled Tatamo!, a foldable electric bike that doesn’t require a car or motorcycle license.
Japanese tech media reports on the 12th revealed that Tatamo folds into a suitcase-like shape, weighs about 25 kg (55 pounds), and has a top speed of around 20 km/h (12 mph).
While similar to ICOMA’s existing TATAMEL bike, Tatamo targets a different market. TATAMEL was designed for motorcycle enthusiasts, while Tatamo aims to attract casual urban commuters.
Unlike TATAMEL, which requires a driver’s license, Tatamo is classified as an electric scooter in Japan, allowing operation without a license. The bike features a display with an eye-shaped animation that blinks during rides, adding a unique touch. Tatamo’s weight has been reduced from TATAMEL’s 64 kg (141 pounds), enhancing portability.
Tatamo, currently in the prototype phase, shows strong potential for future commercialization. The company is fine-tuning its features and design, with plans to incorporate user feedback from upcoming exhibitions to refine the product.
