Mitsubishi will update its flagship minivan model, the Delica, after an 18-year gap since the launch of the fifth-generation model in 2007. According to local Japanese media, the Delica D:6 will be released soon, with an official launch expected next year. The new model promises significant changes, targeting the off-road-based family car market.

This new model is expected to feature a bold design inspired by the D:X concept car. Its geometric body structure, featuring a semi-bonnet, a cap-over design, thin headlights, and a cladding line that seamlessly connects the bumper to the fender, will enhance its identity as an off-road minivan. The new design will set it apart from traditional minivans, establishing a distinct presence.

Powertrain Focus: Plug-in Hybrid and Off-Road Capabilities

The new Delica’s powertrain will likely include a 2.4L gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery, forming a plug-in hybrid system. With an estimated output of around 224 horsepower and a maximum torque of 38.0 kgf·m (280 lb-ft), it will also incorporate Mitsubishi’s signature S-AWC AWD system, which has been improved for better off-road performance. This system is expected to excel in challenging terrain without direct driving experience.

One notable feature is the dial-based terrain mode selection, which is expected to provide stable traction across various conditions, including regular roads, snow, and muddy paths. This makes the new Delica a likely choice for those seeking a vehicle suited for camping, outdoor adventures, and leisure activities. It continues the legacy of the Space Gear, the predecessor of the Delica D: series.

A Completely Redesigned Interior

The long-running Delica D:5 had an aging design that limited the integration of modern features like advanced infotainment systems. Now, with the full redesign of the model, a significantly different cockpit is expected. The new Delica is anticipated to feature a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a large infotainment display, offering a more modern and advanced in-car experience. Premium interior materials and ambient lighting will elevate the cabin’s luxurious feel.

The vehicle’s dimensions are expected to be around 4,800mm (188.98 inches) long and 1,800mm (70.87 inches) wide, providing ample cargo space and the possibility of a 7- or 8-passenger configuration. The estimated price in Japan is around 5 million yen (approximately 35,000 USD), which is slightly higher than comparable minivans in the same segment. However, the Delica’s unique position, inherited from the Space Gear, has earned it a dedicated fan base that values its distinct character over price.

Targeted at Eco-Conscious, Off-Road Families

Despite the shrinking global MPV market due to the rise of SUVs, Mitsubishi remains focused on offering the D:6 as a larger, hybrid-powered minivan with off-road appeal. The PHEV technology—already a strength for Mitsubishi—ensures that the Delica D:6 is a balanced choice for consumers seeking sustainability and practicality.

The production version of the D:6 will be unveiled in 2025, and its global launch could influence the market’s competitive dynamics. With its unique design, the Delica will likely attract attention on the road and is positioned as a model that could expand diversity within the minivan segment. The D:6, building on the legacy of the Delica D:5, has the potential to help Mitsubishi strengthen its presence in the market.
