Toyota has launched a new manual transmission (MT) model of its luxury SUV, the Legender 4X4, in the Indian market. This model offers a driving experience that is differentiated from the existing automatic transmission model. It emphasizes the appeal of a genuine SUV and maximizes off-road performance and the pleasure of operation. Let’s examine what changes Toyota has attempted as SUVs become increasingly popular in the Indian market.

Powerful Diesel Engine with True SUV Feel

The Legend 4X4 is the Fortuner’s upper model and has been consistently popular since its launch in the Indian market in 2021. It features a four-wheel drive system specialized for off-road driving, making driving easy on rough terrain. The MT model added this time is targeted at drivers who want a more direct operating feel, unlike the existing automatic transmission model.

The new MT model is equipped with a 2.8L diesel engine. This engine produces a maximum output of 204 horsepower and a maximum torque of 420 Nm. It is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission to enable more active driving. Drivers can adjust the gear shift when driving off-road, allowing them to utilize the vehicle’s output more effectively.

The pleasure of gear shifting was also emphasized. The 6-speed manual transmission has an excellent direct feel and is designed to enable fast and precise shifting. This allows the vehicle to be controlled more stably, even on rough terrain, and provides satisfactory responsiveness even when driving on general roads.

Aggressive Styling and Premium Design

The Legender 4X4 MT model combines rugged off-road performance with a refined, upscale design.

  • Front Bumper Design: Inspired by a catamaran, giving the SUV a dynamic and muscular stance.
  • Piano Black Grille: Adds a premium touch to the bold front-end design.
  • Split Quad Headlamps and Waterfall LED DRLs: Improve nighttime visibility and add a high-tech look.

Upscale Interior with Comfort and Convenience

The interior of the Legender 4X4 MT emphasizes both comfort and luxury.

  • Two-Tone Interior: The interior features a black and maroon color scheme, with contrast stitching on the steering wheel and console box, which enhances the premium feel.
  • Mood Lighting: This is placed on the instrument panel, door trim, and footwell to create a sophisticated atmosphere.

Toyota has also focused on comfort and convenience:

  • Ventilated Seats: High-performance ventilation systems for the driver and passenger ensure comfort during long-distance driving and in hot weather.
  • Advanced Infotainment System: Includes the latest connectivity options and an upgraded audio system.
  • Comprehensive Safety Package: This includes driver assistance systems such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking.

Expanding Choices for Indian Consumers

With the launch of the Legend 4X4 MT model, Toyota is set further to solidify its position in the Indian SUV market. While many consumers are accustomed to automatic transmissions, the launch is expected to be positive as it will provide more options for drivers who still prefer manual transmissions.
