Can we truly achieve car-free city centers? Major European cities are reducing vehicle space and prioritizing pedestrian-friendly transportation policies.

Toyota’s 249cm (98 inches) Ultra-Compact Car: Foldable Seats and Bike-Friendly Design

This shift has increased interest in alternative mobility solutions, particularly ultra-compact, smaller, and more eco-friendly electric vehicles than traditional cars. These vehicles run on electricity, making them suitable for narrow streets and low-speed zones and positioning them as a viable option for urban commuting.

One of the most notable models in this segment is Citroën’s Ami. The global sales leader, Toyota has entered the market by introducing its FT-Me concept car, signaling its commitment to the ultra-compact EV sector.

The FT-Me is an innovative, ultra-compact electric vehicle designed with urban mobility in mind.

The FT-Me measures 249 cm (98 inches) in length, making it even smaller than the Smart Fortwo. It maintains a two-seat layout, but the passenger seat is removable, which allows space for a folding bike or large cargo.

Advanced Features: Smartphone Integration and Solar Charging

The FT-Me features a square steering wheel and a smartphone-based ignition system. Drivers can start the vehicle instantly by docking their smartphones on the dashboard.

The large windshield improves visibility, reducing the need for parking assistance in tight spaces. The electric motor powers the front wheels, and the roof-mounted solar panels help recharge the battery.

The FT-Me has a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) and a range of 100 km (62 miles) per charge, which makes it ideal for urban commuting rather than highway driving.
