Toyota unveiled its third-generation fuel cell system last week, marking a significant leap in hydrogen technology. The new system boasts improved durability and range while substantially cutting production costs. Toyota aims to implement this advanced technology across various vehicles, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles. Prototype launches are slated for 2026.

Since the debut of the Mirai FCEV in 2014, Toyota has successfully placed about 28,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles in more than thirty countries. Since 2019, the company has also supplied fuel cell systems to diverse sectors, including public transit and railways.

Toyota’s third-generation fuel cell system was developed after years of rigorous testing and real-world feedback. This iterative process has enabled Toyota to double the system’s durability, matching the longevity of diesel engines while offering the added benefit of reduced maintenance requirements.

The new system delivers a 20% increase in driving range and a 1.2-fold improvement in fuel efficiency compared to its predecessors. Toyota has also achieved significant cost reductions through innovations in cell design and manufacturing processes.

Toyota’s vision for this next-generation fuel cell system extends beyond passenger vehicles. The automaker plans to integrate the technology into various applications, including buses, trucks, trains, and heavy machinery. The company targets a global rollout, with initial launches planned for Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026.
