Tesla’s Cybertruck Faces Delays Due to Weak Window Trim Adhesion

Tesla’s Cybertruck deliveries are being delayed due to issues with the window trim. The decorative trim connecting the windows to the roof is reportedly attached using only adhesive, making it prone to detachment. Buyers have expressed disappointment, noting that the exterior of the Cybertruck, which was marketed as a bulletproof truck, can be removed by hand without tools.

A video posted on YouTube by Cybertruck owner Reid Thomasko shows that the trim on the vehicle’s Kentrail variant detaches easily.

According to Electrek, a U.S.-based electric vehicle publication, many recent Cybertruck buyers have experienced delivery delays on Thursday. Tesla stated that these delays are due to a containment hold applied when quality issues are found in produced vehicles. This measure is intended to address defects before delivery to prevent potential recalls.

Tesla has not disclosed the exact cause of the delays but has informed some buyers of an issue with the Kentrail trim. This trim is a structural component supporting the roof at the top of the window frame. Problems with the decorative trim between the driver’s and passenger’s windows and the roof have caused the delivery setbacks.

Cybertruck owners have shared videos and photos on social media, showing the trim detaching and expressing their frustration. The separated trim appears to be affixed only with adhesive. Some users have shown that it can be removed by hand without tools. The lack of mechanical fasteners indicates that the adhesive may have been weak from the start or that rough driving conditions may have reduced its effectiveness, making detachment easier.

Electrek stated that Tesla claimed the Cybertruck is bulletproof and features an exoskeleton, but its actual construction is closer to a traditional unibody chassis with weakly attached exterior trim.

Since its launch in December 2023, the Cybertruck has undergone seven recalls. Last summer, the trim detachment issue led to the recall of over 11,000 units. The Verge, a tech-focused publication, reported that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is facing another challenge with the Cybertruck. Since he was appointed special advisor to the Trump administration, the truck has become a target for vandalism and graffiti.
