Interest is growing in BYD’s upcoming launch model. One of them is the minivan Xia which was recently released. The minivan market is virtually monopolized by the Kia Carnival, so consumers are happy to see a competitor. There aren’t many reviews yet, but reviews in the Chinese region show that its convenience is considered to be top-notch.

The Xia’s standout feature is its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system, setting it apart from the Carnival. While an all-electric Carnival was anticipated, market shifts led Kia to stick with a hybrid powertrain.

Fully electric minivans face challenges: large batteries increase weight and reduce efficiency, while smaller batteries compromise range. BYD’s plug-in hybrid approach aims to strike the perfect balance.

Xia’s Powerful Hybrid Powertrain: The Best of Both Worlds

In the case of Xia, it combines a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine and a 268-horsepower electric motor to generate a total system output of 422 horsepower. It can drive 80 km (50 miles) in electric mode alone, and boasts a fuel efficiency of 15.3 km/L (36.0 mpg) in hybrid mode.

This is a high level among minivans in the same class, and it is likely to be a suitable choice for consumers who want both the advantages of internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles.

Spacious space and premium interior

In the case of Xia, the length is 5,145 mm (202.6 inches), the width is 1,970 mm (77.6 inches), and the height is 1,805 mm (71.1 inches). This is slightly smaller than the Carnival. The wheelbase is 3,045 mm (119.9 inches), and it boasts a spacious trunk that can hold four large travel carriers at the same time, even when the third row is unfolded. When the third row seats are folded, the trunk space increases to over 2,000 liters.

The interior features a three-sided display including a large central screen. The second-row seats have a wide relaxation reminiscent of first-class airplane seats.

Cutting-edge Technology and Convenience Features

BYD has equipped Xia with its latest driving assistance systems. It is equipped with BYD’s advanced ADAS system, and the electromagnetic suspension system adjusts the damping force in real time according to road conditions to provide the best ride.

In addition, various convenient functions have been added, such as a wireless mobile phone charging pad, a center fascia display that rotates 90 degrees, a large second-row screen, a practical cup holder with cooling and heating functions, and an electric door open/close button.

Market Potential: Can the Xia Challenge the Carnival?

Xia can drive 80 km (50 miles) like an electric vehicle after a charge, so it can be used as an electric vehicle for commuting or driving in the city. This could be an ideal alternative for consumers who are concerned about the lack of charging infrastructure and driving range of pure electric cars.

Since BYD mainly exports electric vehicles overseas, the possibility of launching an engine-powered Xia seems low at present. This is because electric cars are much easier to operate than vehicles with internal combustion engines in terms of certification, maintenance, and parts supply. Another problem is that they cannot receive eco-friendly vehicles subsidies.

However, industry insiders say that if the environment is right for Xia to be launched in South Korea, it could shake up Carnival’s monopoly, citing recent examples of high-priced minivans such as the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM that have received good responses in the market.
