Inside the $24,000 Golf Cart That Might Be Nicer Than Your Actual Car

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, long hailed as the pinnacle of luxury SUVs, has found a new iteration. Spotted on American golf courses, this isn’t just a golf cart—it’s an electric vehicle inspired by the G-Class, with a hefty 24,000 USD price tag. Dubbed the Bodo E-Wagon, this miniature marvel features an interior and specs that could rival some real cars.

Recently sold at a U.S. auction, the E-Wagon is a high-end toy for adults with deep pockets. It feels more like a luxury vehicle than a golf cart, loaded with luxury amenities like power windows, door locks, rear-seat displays, plush brown leather seats, and heating and air conditioning. Some say its interior outclasses certain mid-size cars. The E-Wagon quickly becomes the must-have status symbol for wealthy golfers.

Despite its smaller size, the mini G-Wagen proves no cheap imitation. It lacks the full-size model’s imposing dimensions but impresses with attention to detail. A custom emblem replaces the Mercedes star to sidestep legal issues, though owners can easily swap it out. Classified as a low-speed vehicle, it becomes street-legal in some states on roads with speed limits under 40 km/h (25 mph).

The E-Wagon offers more than just style with solid performance. It tops out at 56 km/h (34.8 mph) and features a 10 kWh battery, providing up to 128 km (79.5 miles) on a single charge, similar to early electric vehicles like the BMW i3. Its 20-horsepower electric motor is ideal for cruising fairways or short city trips. Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, a rearview camera, LED lighting, turn signals, and wipers, it serves as both a refuge from downpours and a mode of transport.

The E-Wagon isn’t a one-off novelty. Florida-based dealer Gulf Carts now offers luxury-themed golf carts, including miniature versions of the Porsche Cayenne, Land Rover models, and the Ram TRX. These carts feature interiors meticulously recreated to match their full-size counterparts, representing a new frontier in customized toys for the affluent, aimed at turning heads at the clubhouse.

Many E-Wagon buyers already own a full-size G-Wagen for city driving. The golf cart version allows them to extend their luxury lifestyle onto the course, serving more as a rolling status symbol than transportation.

The E-Wagon prioritizes wit and symbolism over practicality but includes essential electric vehicle features. This golf cart, equipped with range, safety features, and convenience specs, is a prime example of how far everyday indulgence can extend.

The E-Wagon offers a fresh perspective on why the wealthy gravitate toward high-performance cars. It combines modest speed, key features, and abundant personality, suggesting a shift in affluent tastes from raw power to concept and wit. A round of golf might even offer a chance to encounter an owner willing to let you experience the G-Wagen cart firsthand.
