Another barn find story has captivated classic car enthusiasts worldwide. This time, it’s a Buick Riviera, discovered languishing in an old warehouse, reigniting the passion for automotive preservation.

In 1968, Buick sold over 650,000 vehicles, marking one of its most successful years. The Riviera, the brand’s flagship coupe, was central to this momentum. With a base price of $4,615, it was the most expensive model in the lineup and was aimed at the luxury market with a wide range of optional features. Buyers at the time could choose from conveniences like air conditioning, power windows, power disc brakes, tinted glass, cruise control, and cornering lights.

Every 1968 Riviera had a 430-cubic-inch V8 engine paired with a three-speed Super Turbine automatic transmission. The engine produced 360 horsepower and delivered a deep, resonant exhaust note through dual pipes. Over the years, these vehicles have become increasingly rare on public roads, often in private collections or salvage yards. The recent listing of a Riviera on eBay has once again captured the attention of classic car enthusiasts.

Decades Later, This Riviera Still Stands Strong

The 1968 Buick Riviera recently listed for sale is stored in a warehouse in Griffin, Georgia, for an extended period. The car still has its original 430 V8 engine, and despite limited maintenance over the years, the trunk and undercarriage are in relatively good condition. The floor pan shows minimal rust, and the frame remains structurally sound, a positive sign for those considering restoration. However, a full inspection with the car on a lift is strongly recommended before purchase.

The exterior reflects years of aging, though most trim pieces are stored in the trunk. Some interior components, like the front headlights and seat covers, appear missing but are generally considered easier to replace. Since the vehicle’s structure and parts remain fairly complete, the project may be manageable even for newcomers to classic car restoration. Once restored, the Riviera’s signature fastback silhouette is expected to offer strong visual appeal.

The 430 big-block engine still starts, and basic operation has been confirmed. However, the transmission does not shift properly beyond second gear and will likely require servicing. The seller has not provided additional details regarding mechanical issues or confirmed whether the car’s engine and transmission are original. For these reasons, a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified mechanic is advised.

Classic Appeal with Real-World Considerations

The 1968 Riviera may not be among the most sought-after models in today’s classic car market. It holds more niche appeal than iconic mainstream vehicles like the Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro. As such, it may be more realistic to approach this car as a personal restoration project rather than an investment. Even so, its large-displacement V8 engine and Buick’s signature upscale interior design remain compelling attributes. For some buyers, the model’s relative obscurity may even increase its sense of satisfaction and uniqueness.

The car is listed on eBay for $6,500, a relatively accessible price point for those new to classic car ownership. The fact that the engine starts and the body appears largely intact suggests that future restoration costs could be kept within reason. Buyers should consider the full picture beyond the listed price, including transportation, parts availability, paintwork, and interior restoration expenses. The Riviera is not a typical used car—it’s a collectible that demands time and effort to realize its full potential.

The listing currently allows buyer offers, and the seller is reportedly open to reasonable proposals. Despite being newly listed, the car has attracted interest from 13 watchers, suggesting potential movement in the coming weeks. However, due to the known transmission issue, the car cannot be driven and will require flatbed transport after purchase.
