Toyota’s rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, the GR86, enters the 2026 model year with a new limited-run version, the Yuzu Special Edition, featuring a vivid yellow exterior and a bundled performance upgrade. This edition is designed to attract both GR86 fans and collectors, combining aesthetic appeal with enhanced driving dynamics. Limited to 860 units for the North American market, the model revives and modernizes the Yuzu Yellow color previously seen on the 2015 Scion FR-S Series 1.0.

Since its launch, the GR86 has been consistently recognized for its engaging handling and driving feel. While many competitors have adopted turbocharged or hybrid powertrains, the GR86 continues with its naturally aspirated flat-four engine. Following the Trueno Edition, Toyota is leveraging the Yuzu Edition to underscore the GR86’s authenticity and special appeal.

More Than Just a New Paint Job: GR Performance Package Included

The GR86 Yuzu Edition is far more than a simple color variant. Its retro-inspired Yuzu Yellow paint contrasts sharply with matte black 18-inch wheels, maximizing visual contrast. The interior maintains this theme with yellow contrast stitching on the steering wheel, parking brake, and door trim. Suede upholstery adds a touch of luxury to the seats.

This limited edition comes standard with the GR Performance Package, previously an optional extra on the regular GR86. The package includes larger Brembo brakes for all four wheels and performance-tuned SACHS suspension – features that were standard only on the 2024 Trueno Edition. Toyota will also offer a cat-back exhaust system and a bespoke body kit as separate accessories.

Fast Doesn’t Always Mean Fun: Preserving the Joy of Driving

The Yuzu Edition retains the same powertrain as the standard GR86: a 2.4-liter flat-four, naturally aspirated engine. It produces 228 horsepower and 25.4 kgf·m (184 lb-ft) of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. This setup prioritizes driver engagement over outright performance, staying true to the GR86’s ethos of being fun to drive, even if it’s not the quickest car.

By continuing to pair a high-revving naturally aspirated engine with a manual transmission, Toyota reinforces the GR brand’s focus on pure driving enjoyment instead of turning to turbocharging or hybrid systems. This setup has been well-received, particularly by drivers who prefer an accessible yet engaging sports car. It’s also viewed as a deliberate effort to preserve the heritage of the 86 series, originating with the iconic AE86 Trueno.

Act Fast or Miss Out: A Sports Car That Puts the Fun in Functional

With only 860 units planned for North America, the GR86 Yuzu Special Edition will be offered in strictly limited numbers, and there is no official word yet regarding its availability in other markets. Given its exclusivity and standard performance package, the model is expected to generate significant interest among GR fans. This edition may evoke nostalgia for enthusiasts who recall the 2015 Scion FR-S Series 1.0.

The Yuzu Edition delivers more than just a new color. It reflects the GR86’s legacy, enjoyable driving dynamics, and limited-edition appeal in a single offering. This release highlights Toyota’s continued focus on producing vehicles prioritizing the driving experience. For those who value the core identity and emotional character of the GR brand, this edition stands out as a notable model worth attention.
