The RUF brand made a significant mark on the supercar market in the 1980s and 1990s, with the 1987 CTR Yellowbird standing out as one of the most legendary vehicles ever produced. Known for its extraordinary performance and status as the world’s fastest mass-produced car at the time, the Yellowbird recently proved its lasting value by fetching an impressive $6.055 million at an auction in the U.S.
Out of the 29 Yellowbirds ever built, the auction vehicle has become even more desirable due to its rare specifications. While based on the 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, nearly every aspect of this car—from the engine to the transmission and body—has been newly designed by RUF. The original 3.2-liter engine was enlarged to 3.4 liters, and a turbocharger and intercooler were added, boosting output to 463 horsepower. This transformation helped the Yellowbird reach a top speed of 342 km/h (213 mph) in 1987, surpassing the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959 to claim the title of the fastest production vehicle in the world.

A Stunning Example with Minimal Mileage
The specific Yellowbird up for auction, chassis number 26, is even more exceptional due to its original paint and Leichtbau package, which reduces weight using aluminum for the bonnet, doors, and front fenders. Inside, the car is equipped with an aluminum roll cage, Recaro bucket seats, and a Blaupunkt audio system. What makes this model particularly valuable is its low mileage—just 1,673 km (1,039 miles) since its release. The owner has taken meticulous care of the car, regularly running the engine and changing the oil, ensuring it remains pristine, unlike many classic cars left unused in garages.

A 40-fold Increase in Value
The original price of the RUF CTR Yellowbird was $147,800, which, when adjusted for inflation, would be around $400,000 today. However, the recent auction sale saw the Yellowbird reach a record $6.055 million, representing a remarkable 40-fold (1,401%) increase in value. This sale underscores the vehicle’s iconic status and highlights its continued appeal to collectors and enthusiasts.

RUF’s Legacy as a Legendary Manufacturer
RUF’s reputation extends far beyond its role as a Porsche tuner. The company has consistently developed high-performance models based on Porsche chassis, creating unique vehicles that embody its independent identity. The Yellowbird, now a living legend, is a testament to RUF’s role in the history of automotive performance in the 1980s and 1990s. Even today, RUF continues to build its legacy, with models like the RUF SCR and CTR Anniversary offering entirely new parts while still drawing from Porsche’s engineering.
