Tesla Model S Update: What’s New in the 2026 Facelift?

Tesla’s flagship sedan, the Model S, is set to undergo another round of updates. Expectations are for a facelift rather than a complete overhaul. The Model S has been around for over a decade, with significant updates in 2017 and 2022. However, recent statements from Tesla Engineering Vice President Lars Moravy suggest that the upcoming changes will draw inspiration from the technologies used in the Model 3 and Model Y, with the 2026 Model S likely reflecting these developments.

Exterior Design: Inspired by the Model Y

The exterior of the 2026 Model S is expected to be inspired by the 2026 Model Y, offering a sleeker and more sophisticated look. Automotive media have already released renderings showing the new Model S, which is expected to feature significant changes to the front and rear designs. The front is expected to feature separate LED headlights, a more aggressive bumper design, and a revamped front air intake, contributing to a sportier and more dynamic appearance.

For the rear, Tesla is likely to adopt the “indirect lighting” method of full-wide tail lamps, which was recently introduced in the Model Y. This change will enhance visibility at night and contribute to a more futuristic look. The exterior redesign will likely improve aerodynamic performance, building on the efficiency gains of the 2022 Model S and a new wheel and brake system that may boost mileage and performance.

Interior: Subtle Updates

Given the significant overhaul in 2022, major changes are not anticipated inside the Model S. The focus will likely be on improving finer details, such as the quality of finishes, and possibly adding new functions. Features like the ambient lighting seen in the Model Y may be integrated into the Model S, as well as a new front bumper camera to enhance the car’s driving assistance functions.

Powertrain: Likely to Stay the Same

The powertrain of the 2026 Model S is expected to remain essentially unchanged. The current Model S is available in two variants: the AWD base model, which offers a driving range of 410 miles and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and the high-performance Plaid model, which boasts a 1,020-horsepower tri-motor, a 0 to 60 mph time of just 1.99 seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).

Tesla has consistently enhanced the performance of the Model S through software updates, and the 2026 model will likely see minor performance improvements through optimized power efficiency. Overall, the 2026 Model S is expected to refine the existing model’s strengths rather than introduce significant changes.

Release and Reception

The 2026 Model S will launch in the second half of the year. While this facelift is likely to bring some fresh updates, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to keep consumers excited or if it will be seen as just another rehash of the existing model. With the growing competition in the luxury electric vehicle market, Tesla must ensure that the updates to the Model S deliver enough innovation to remain a top contender.
