Rivian’s Electric Van Breaks Free from Amazon—Now Available to Corporate Buyers

Rivian’s electric delivery van, known for its distinctive design, has made a lasting impression in the electric vehicle market. This vehicle is easily recognizable with its round, large headlights, flat body, long wheelbase, and LED arch wrapping around the rear. Originally exclusive to Amazon, the Rivian electric van is now available to general buyers after its exclusivity contract ended at the close of 2023.

Expanding Rivian’s Product Line: Delivery 500 and 700 Models

Currently, Rivian offers its longer-wheelbase Delivery 500 and 700 electric vans to corporate and institutional customers. This expansion into electric vans is part of Rivian’s broader strategy to diversify its product lineup, which already includes the R1S SUV, R1T truck, and, soon, the R2 SUV.

However, individual consumers cannot purchase the van directly from Rivian, as the company primarily sells to corporate and fleet buyers. Individuals determined to acquire the van could potentially do so by forming a limited liability company (LLC), recognized as a business entity that could meet Rivian’s purchasing requirements.

Rivian Electric Van Performance: Large Cargo Space and Impressive Specifications

Both models boast large cargo spaces. The Delivery 500 offers 487 cubic feet of space and a cargo capacity of 2,663 pounds, while the Delivery 700 has 652 cubic feet of space but a lower cargo capacity of 2,258 pounds.

The 700 model’s cargo capacity is smaller due to its body size. Both models are limited to a GVWR of 9,500 pounds, so the longer 700 model’s weight is the reason.

Both models are front-wheel drive (FWD) and are equipped with an electric motor that produces 320 horsepower (hp) and 299 lb-ft (406 Nm). The battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and supports Level 2 charging (11 kW) and DC fast charging (100 kW).

The range on a single charge is 161 miles for the Delivery 500 and 160 miles for the Delivery 700. The longer 700 model has a range of 1 mile less due to its increased weight. However, this seems to be enough for urban delivery work.

These models can be used as delivery vehicles, food trucks, and mobile work vehicles. The design that considers frequent boarding and disembarkation allows the driver to move more conveniently, and the extra-large rear door makes it easy to load and unload luggage.

Pricing and Competitiveness in the Electric Van Market

The Delivery 500 is priced at $79,900, while the Delivery 700 costs $83,900. These prices are competitive with other high-end electric delivery vehicles, such as Mercedes-Benz’s e-Sprint, and are nearly double the price of Ford’s electric Transit. However, Rivian’s unique design, brand reputation, and cutting-edge electric vehicle technology may make it a compelling choice for urban logistics companies investing in electric solutions. With the increasing shift to electric vehicles in the urban logistics sector, demand for Rivian’s electric vans is expected to grow.
