Zeekr, the premium electric vehicle brand under China’s Geely Group, has unveiled the 9X, a full-size plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, marking a major expansion into the luxury SUV market. This is Zeekr’s first departure from its battery electric vehicle (BEV)-only strategy, and the model is aimed squarely at rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7.
Front-End Design Evokes Rolls-Royce — A Distinctive Exterior Look
The Zeekr 9X stands out with a bold front design that emphasizes its full-size SUV stature. Its large rectangular grille and angular lines resemble those of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, while the profile reveals a more differentiated silhouette. Subtle metallic trim wrapping around the upper side panels enhances the upscale feel, and the three-row seating layout ensures both practicality and spaciousness.

885 Horsepower and 0–100 km/h in 3 Seconds — High-Performance PHEV
The powertrain pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 275 horsepower with two electric motors, delivering a total system output of approximately 885 horsepower. The 9X can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0–60 mph) in about 3 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). The gasoline engine is mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission and supports both direct propulsion and battery charging. While battery capacity has not been disclosed, the vehicle offers an estimated range of around 380 km (236 miles) based on China’s CLTC standard.
900V Fast-Charging Architecture and Level 3 Autonomous Driving
Built on a 900-volt platform, the 9X can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 9 minutes. A 48-volt auxiliary system supports internal vehicle functions. The dual-chamber air suspension and active roll control system enhance driving stability, and the vehicle comes equipped with a Level 3 autonomous driving system utilizing LiDAR and cameras.

Zeekr stated that it opted for a PHEV system instead of a BEV due to the expectations of full-size SUV customers who prioritize long-range capabilities. Installing a large-capacity battery would significantly increase costs, and even in China, where charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, PHEVs remain a practical choice in the luxury SUV segment.
Rather than using an EREV (range-extended EV) architecture where the engine only acts as a generator, Zeekr chose a standard PHEV system with direct power transmission. This reflects the broader adoption of conventional hybrid setups over EREVs in the current Chinese market.
The launch of the 9X symbolizes a strategic shift for Zeekr and China’s premium EV sector. By introducing its first PHEV, Zeekr is making a pragmatic move to strengthen its competitiveness in the global luxury SUV market.
China’s luxury vehicle market continues to show strong demand for large SUVs, with consumer preferences leaning toward powertrains that combine long range and fast charging capabilities. Zeekr has recognized this trend and boldly shifted its product strategy in response.
With features such as a 900V architecture, Level 3 autonomous driving, and advanced suspension systems, the 9X showcases Zeekr’s ambition to establish itself as a technology-driven premium brand. In earlier models like the Zeekr 7X and 009, the company similarly emphasized refined design, premium materials, and proprietary technologies—gearing up to compete directly with European giants like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
Moreover, the 9X’s hybrid powertrain strategy—combining electric motors with an engine—suggests an eye toward export markets where charging infrastructure is still limited, such as the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia. As Chinese brands like BYD, Chery, and XPeng expand their presence in Europe with EREV and hybrid vehicles, Zeekr’s entry reflects a broader shift in strategy.
While it remains to be seen how the Zeekr 9X will perform in the market, it clearly marks a strategic turning point aimed at increasing China’s presence in the luxury SUV space.
