Ferrari’s 296 Speciale Roars Into the Hybrid Era—Without Losing Its Soul

Ferrari unveils the 296 Speciale, a new model continuing the legacy of the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. This mid-engine plug-in hybrid Berlinetta, based on the 296 GTB, elevates driving performance and immersion.

The 296 Speciale delivers 880 horsepower, combining a 120° V6 twin-turbo engine with an electric motor. This marks a 50-horsepower increase over the 296 GTB, making it the most powerful rear-wheel-drive production Ferrari. Inspired by the 296 Challenge, the engine management system features titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons, and a lightweight crankshaft. The V6 engine produces 700 horsepower, while the electric motor provides up to 180 horsepower in extra boost mode. The 8-speed DCT transmission optimizes quicker shifts, leveraging enhanced torque.

Aerodynamics have been significantly improved, generating 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h (155 mph), a 20% increase over the 296 GTB. The car features aero dampers on the front hood, vertical fins on the rear bumper, and new side wings working with an active rear spoiler. The spoiler offers low drag, medium downforce, and high downforce modes, with transition speeds 50% faster than before.

Ferrari achieves a 60 kg (132 lbs) weight reduction compared to the 296 GTB, using carbon fiber for the body and titanium for engine components. This results in a class-leading weight-to-power ratio of 1.60 kg/hp for rear-wheel-drive Ferrari Berlinettas.

Every aspect of the car has been meticulously tuned, including electronic control systems, suspension setup, and tires. The latest ABS Evo dynamic control system enhances braking performance, while revised spring and damper settings, along with a 5mm lower ride height, reduce body roll by 13% during cornering.

The 296 Speciale’s 120° V6 twin-turbo engine, shared with the 296 GTB, delivers 700 horsepower and 234 horsepower per liter. It features lightweight components, an advanced boost management system, and F1-derived knock control strategies. The engine’s distinctive sound has been refined, offering improved quality, intensity, and volume.

The electric motor produces up to 180 horsepower through the extra boost system. The eManettino offers four driving modes: eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify. The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission features a new upshift management profile and improved synchronization with the electric motor for faster shifts and enhanced performance.

The exterior design draws from Ferrari’s racing heritage, emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency. Key features include a deeper front hood, floating splitter, aggressive cooling vents, and prominent side wings. Inside, extensive use of carbon fiber and Alcantara creates a lightweight, race-inspired ambiance.

The Ferrari 296 Speciale showcases the brand’s commitment to preserving driving excitement and performance in the electrification era. It builds on the successful plug-in hybrid system of the 296 GTB, making it the most potent rear-wheel-drive Ferrari to date.

The high-performance car market sees a surge in electrification, with Mercedes-AMG setting new benchmarks with models like the C 63 S E Performance and BMW entering with the XM hybrid SUV. The 296 Speciale stands out as a prime example of blending traditional supercar DNA with cutting-edge powertrain technology.

Ferrari’s integration of motorsport technology from the 296 Challenge into road cars solidifies its engineering prowess. Features like the F1-derived knock control system and engine block machining techniques from the Le Mans-winning 499P enhance real-world precision and durability, key factors for discerning high-performance car buyers.

The Ferrari 296 Speciale charts a course for high-performance cars in the electrified future while reaffirming Ferrari’s dedication to delivering signature driving thrills and sensations.
