At the Seoul Mobility Show, Hyundai Motor Company and MTR debuted Korea’s first 11-passenger electric mid-size van, the CV1, setting a new standard in customized, eco-friendly mobility. The CV1 offers versatility, with configurations that can accommodate up to 17 passengers, focusing on practicality and adaptability for various transportation needs.
From Electric Shuttles to School Buses: The Dawn of Customized Mobility

The CV1 is based on the Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) concept, which allows various upper-body assemblies on a fixed lower structure to meet different needs.
Two models were unveiled at the show: the 11-passenger CV1 Shuttle for underserved areas and the 17-passenger CV1 Kinder for student transportation.
The CV1 Shuttle targets the demand-responsive transportation (DRT) market, which is currently dominated by diesel vehicles.
As demand for eco-friendly alternatives rises, this electric shuttle presents an efficient solution for regions with limited public transit.
The CV1 Kinder is designed to replace traditional 15-passenger diesel school buses, offering an environmentally friendly alternative that addresses air pollution and enhances children’s safety. It has received positive feedback for its potential to improve public health and safety.
Flexibility in Design and Performance

The CV1 is more than just a traditional van. Its modular architecture allows height, length, and interior configuration adjustments, with design variations based on the roof type.
This flexibility enables the CV1 to expand into autonomous shuttles, ambulances, disability-friendly transport, and luxury limousines.
MTR stated that the CV1 base model took about 12 months to develop, with derivative versions requiring only six months—a notably shorter timeline than conventional vehicle development. This allows rapid adaptation to diverse market demands.
MTR CEO Cheon Seong Jae highlighted the importance of safety, stating that the CV1 is currently undergoing 16 safety certification tests, including front and rear collision tests, in compliance with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. “Our goal is to deliver a thoroughly vetted, reliable vehicle to the market,” he said.
Targeting Annual Production of 1,000 Units and Expanding Pilot Programs

The CV1 is scheduled to go on sale in late June. MTR targets an annual production of 1,000 units, with an expected price of approximately 90 million KRW (approximately $68,000), factoring in potential government subsidies.
Initial distribution will focus on businesses (B2B) and public institutions (B2G), potentially expanding to general consumers. MTR also plans to broaden pilot programs for electric school buses in partnership with local communities and educational institutions.
MTR emphasized that the CV1 represents Korea’s first eco-friendly mid-size van, developed with our own concept and branding. We’re committed to driving innovation and expanding our presence in Korea’s PBV sector.
