Chinese automaker BYD has officially unveiled its latest compact electric SUV, the Sealion 5, before its launch this Tuesday. The new model has high-tech features, including a built-in refrigerator and BYD’s innovative Gods Eye advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).

With plans to roll out the Sealion 5 globally, including in European markets, industry experts are speculating whether this exciting new EV will be available in the U.S.

Compact EV Packed with Cutting-Edge Technology

The Sealion 5 hybridizes BYD’s Atto 3 and Sealion 7 models. It offers a fully electric option instead of the company’s plug-in hybrid lineup. At 177.9 inches long, 73.2 inches wide, and 64.2 inches high, and with a 107.5-inch wheelbase, the Sealion 5 is comparable in size to popular electric SUVs like the BMW iX1 and Mercedes-Benz EQA.

The Sealion 5 offers an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen display. It also includes wireless smartphone charging and a column-mounted gear selector for added convenience.

A standout feature of the Sealion 5 is its voice-controlled refrigerator, which allows users to adjust the temperature easily. The exterior is sleek and features BYD’s latest design language. It is available in four color options.

Impressive Performance and Advanced Driver Assistance

The Sealion 5 has two battery options: a 50 kWh and a 60.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Based on the Chinese CLTC standard, these offer ranges of 267 miles (430 km) and 323 miles (520 km), respectively. The vehicle supports 150 kW fast charging and features a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Depending on the trim, the Sealion 5 produces either 188 or 215 horsepower.

Standard on the Sealion 5 is BYD’s advanced Gods Eye ADAS, which includes 12 cameras (with three front-facing), five millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. This system also integrates intelligent navigation, voice recognition, and AI technology, making the driving experience safer and more intuitive.

While BYD has not officially disclosed the price of the Sealion 5, reports suggest it will be between 115,000 yuan (roughly $15,870) and 150,000 yuan (around $15,900).
