While Porsche entered the electric vehicle (EV) market with its Taycan in 2019, Ferrari has yet to release its electric car. However, the automotive world is buzzing after Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle (BEV) was spotted during cold-weather testing in Sweden. Expected to be officially unveiled in the second half of 2025, this vehicle’s final design remains under wraps. However, early sightings of a Maserati Levante body paired with Ferrari Roma headlights suggest it could be a high-performance SUV.

In a groundbreaking move, Ferrari is set to introduce in-wheel hub motor technology in this new EV, signaling the brand’s most significant innovation in decades. By eliminating the traditional transmission, Ferrari aims to maximize interior space and improve overall performance. The company has already filed for a U.S. patent for this revolutionary technology, paving the way for its mass production.

Transmission-Free Design: Ferrari Embraces Cutting-Edge Innovation

The innovative in-wheel hub motor technology integrates electric motors directly into each wheel, eliminating the need for a conventional transmission system. This breakthrough promises better use of space and greater energy efficiency. Ferrari’s commitment to this cutting-edge technology is evident. In April 2023, the company filed a U.S. patent, signaling its plans for large-scale production.

However, this design isn’t without challenges. The additional weight of the wheel-mounted motors could potentially affect vehicle handling. Industry experts are closely watching how Ferrari, known for its precision engineering and suspension tuning, will address these concerns to maintain its renowned driving experience.

Test mules have been spotted wearing Pirelli ELECT P Zero Winter 2 tires, with front sizes of 265/35 R23 and rear sizes of 315/35 R24. This highlights Ferrari’s aspirations to be a high-performance SUV. Automotive enthusiasts are eager to see how Ferrari’s legendary performance translates into challenging conditions like snowy roads.

Ferrari’s Electric Future: Balancing Performance with Innovation

Ferrari has announced ambitious plans to develop its own electric motors, inverters, and batteries to deliver unmatched performance in the electric vehicle market. The company aims for industry-leading power density and weight management, raising the question of how this iconic supercar brand will maintain its emotional appeal as it transitions to electric power.

The Italian automaker has also hinted at potential partnerships to integrate cutting-edge technologies like solid-state batteries, which could enhance energy efficiency and improve range. To address range anxiety, Ferrari is expected to offer comprehensive warranty programs and battery replacement plans, reassuring consumers about the long-term reliability of its electric vehicles.

Insiders speculate that Ferrari’s first electric vehicle could cost over 500,000 (approximately $542,600), cementing its position as a luxury EV. The industry eagerly awaits the official unveiling at Ferrari’s Capital Market Day in October 2025, curious to see if this new model can deliver the same thrilling performance and emotional appeal that has long defined Ferrari’s legendary gasoline-powered cars.
