Volkswagen Korea has unveiled a new car with remarkable fuel efficiency. The facelifted eighth-generation Golf is now available in the domestic market.

Since its debut in 1974, this hatchback has sold over 37 million units globally. The latest model aims to capture the market with its high fuel efficiency and strong performance.

Its official combined fuel economy is 17.3 km/L, making it a leader in its class. It can achieve up to 20.8 km per liter on highways, allowing a maximum range of 1,000 km (621 miles) on a single tank.

Sleek design and innovative features

The new Golf features a more refined exterior. Volkswagen has introduced its first-ever illuminated logo on the front and a redesigned radiator grille and bumper, which enhance the appearance.

The interior includes a 12.9-inch display with an improved interface, enhancing driver convenience.

Advanced features include wireless smartphone charging and heated front seats, which are standard. The interior also offers a premium touch with 30-color ambient lighting.

The Prestige trim enhances luxury with a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and a three-zone climate control system.

Volkswagen has upgraded its driver assistance systems, incorporating adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and travel assist.

2.0 TDI Engine: Reduced Emissions, Consistent Performance

The powertrain comprises a 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. It delivers 150 horsepower and 36.7 kg·m (265 lb-ft) torque.

Strong torque between 1,600 and 2,750 rpm ensures reliable city and highway driving performance.

The vehicle meets strict environmental regulations. Twin dosing technology with dual SCR catalysts reduces emissions by approximately 80% compared to the previous model.

This eco-friendly model complies with Euro 6d standards, prioritizing both fuel efficiency and sustainability.

Practical Premium: Targeting a Hatchback Market Comeback

The new Golf is available in two trims: the Premium trim costs 40.07 million KRW (approximately $30,000), while the Prestige trim costs 43.96 million KRW (approximately $33,000).

Volkswagen offers a 2 million KRW (approximately $1,500) registration fee subsidy, bringing the actual starting price to around 38 million KRW (approximately $28,500).

Volkswagen plans to launch the high-performance Golf GTI in June. The company aims to highlight the hatchback’s strengths in a market dominated by SUVs and sedans.

Till Scheer, CEO of Volkswagen Group Korea, said the Golf has been Volkswagen’s core model for half a century. He added that the company will offer a new option emphasizing practical premium value.

Industry analysts are watching closely to see whether Volkswagen can reverse its recent sales decline with the new Golf leading the way.
