Mitsubishi has officially launched a limited edition version of its popular 7-seater minivan, the Xpander Hybrid, in Thailand. Dubbed the Xpander HEV Play, the new model brings sportier design elements to the existing hybrid platform, offering a more aggressive look without compromising performance.

Priced at approximately 981,000 baht ($29,197), the Xpander HEV Play targets customers seeking a more dynamic and stylish option in the hybrid minivan segment. Mitsubishi has also introduced a similarly styled version of the Xpander Cross called the Xpander Cross Play, further expanding the brand’s lineup.

Sporty Blacked-Out Styling and Aggressive Details

The front design of the Xpander HEV Play has been significantly modified to emphasize a more sporty feel. To complete the strong impression, the front bumper has a large air intake and splitter, the Dynamic Shield design is finished in black, and dark-toned LED separate headlights have been applied.

The side design shows changes. The black alloy wheels have been applied to give it a sporty feel, but it is disappointing that they look tiny compared to the body. On the other hand, the rear has a large rear spoiler, black diffuser trim, and clear lens-type taillights to emphasize the difference from the existing model. Like the existing Xpander HEV, the exhaust pipe is neatly finished in a hidden form at the bottom of the bumper.

This limited edition model is also applied to the Xpander Cross, which has a configuration that reinforces the SUV style rather than sportiness. The same wheel design as the blacked-out trim and dark lighting elements are reflected, creating a more powerful image unique to SUVs than the basic Xpander model. The body size is 4,475 mm (176.2 inches) in length, 1,750 mm (68.9 inches) in width, 1,730 mm (68.1 inches) in height, and 2,775 mm (109.3 inches) in wheelbase.

Familiar Hybrid Powertrain with a Mild Performance Boost

Under the hood, the Xpander HEV Play retains the existing hybrid powertrain configuration:

  • 1.6-liter gasoline engine paired with a single electric motor.
  • The combined output of 114 horsepower (85 kW / 116 PS) is a modest increase over the standard gasoline model’s 103 horsepower.
  • eCVT transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) are the standard.
  •

While the powertrain remains unchanged, the hybrid system provides improved fuel efficiency and smoother driving characteristics compared to the gasoline-only model.

Premium Interior Touches and Convenience Features

Mitsubishi has focused on enhancing the cabin experience with upscale details:

  • Two-tone interior in black and maroon.
  • Contrast stitching on the seats and steering wheel adds a premium feel.
  • Infotainment System: A large touchscreen display with smartphone connectivity and a premium audio system.
  •

Competitive Pricing and Market Strategy

The Xpander HEV Play is 48,000 baht ($1,429) more expensive than the base Xpander HEV. The price difference is mainly due to design upgrades and the limited-edition badge.

Color options include:

  • White Diamond
  • Graphite Gray
  • The Xpander Cross Play adds the option: Green Bronze

By offering sporty styling and premium features at a reasonable price, Mitsubishi aims to strengthen the Xpander’s competitive edge in the growing hybrid minivan segment.

Positioned for Success in the Thai Market

Mitsubishi has positioned the Xpander HEV Play and Xpander Cross Play as strategic models to capture market share in Thailand’s expanding hybrid SUV and minivan market. The competitive pricing and sporty design enhancements are expected to resonate with Thai consumers looking for a stylish yet practical family vehicle.
