Toyota is gearing up to introduce a new off-road vehicle to the market, one that promises to continue the legacy of the Land Cruiser. Scheduled for release this fall, the new model is expected to be named the Land Cruiser FJ. It’s already creating a buzz among off-road enthusiasts. Can Toyota meet the high expectations set by its iconic predecessors?

The Land Cruiser FJ: A Compact Off-Roader with Classic Appeal

Just one teaser image released in 2023 has captured the attention of off-road fans worldwide.

This model, which appeared alongside the Land Cruiser 70, 250, and 300 series, has been confirmed to have the smallest body in the Land Cruiser family. However, it is too early to conclude that its off-road performance will be poor just because it is small.

Looking at the released images and expected renderings, the vehicle seems to have inherited many of the design elements of Toyota’s Compact Cruiser EV concept introduced in 2021.

The authentic off-roader feel is alive and well, with a strong, straight body, LED headlights, and a flat tailgate equipped with a rear spare tire. In terms of body size, it is expected to be larger than the Corolla Cross but smaller than the RAV4. The wheelbase is estimated to be about 2,750 mm (108.3 inches).

A Ladder-Frame Construction for Maximum Durability

One of the most prominent features of this model is that it maintains a frame body.

Unlike most recent SUVs, which adopt a monocoque structure, the Land Cruiser FJ is said to use a ladder-frame (frame body) structure to ensure rigidity. This is expected to maximize off-road performance and maintain a body design specialized for off-road driving.

Powertrain: A Hybrid Option on the Horizon

Details on the Land Cruiser FJ’s powertrain remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests that Toyota will offer both a gasoline engine and a hybrid system. The 2.7L 4-cylinder 2TR-FE gasoline engine, known for its use in the Toyota Hilux Champ and the Land Cruiser 250 series, is a likely candidate. This engine produces 161 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque, providing ample power for rugged terrain.

Toyota may opt for a more powerful engine for markets like North America. Options include a 2.0L turbocharged engine or a 2.5L hybrid system. The hybrid variant would offer enhanced fuel efficiency, making the model more environmentally friendly while maintaining strong off-road performance.

Global Release and Pricing Expectations

The Land Cruiser FJ is expected to hit the market in the fall of 2025, starting with a launch in Japan, followed by a global rollout. Pricing is anticipated to range between 4 million and 4.5 million yen (about $26,843 to $30,198) in Japan, with a starting price of around $35,000 for the North American market.

Given its strong legacy, Toyota will likely conduct thorough testing to ensure that the Land Cruiser FJ meets the rigorous standards expected of a Land Cruiser. Fans eagerly await the FJ’s upholding of the Land Cruiser’s off-road reputation while offering a modern update to the classic design.
