Mercedes-Benz Unveils Baby G-Class: A Compact, Electric Version of the Iconic G-Wagen

During its recent strategy announcement, Mercedes-Benz unveiled key new car plans that offer a glimpse into the brand’s future. One of the most talked-about highlights was the announcement of the Baby G Wagon and Baby G-Class. The Baby G Wagon will maintain the robust design of the existing G-Class but be developed in a more compact size. The vehicle name will use a lowercase g instead of the capital G.

According to the teaser image, the new compact off-roader, the baby G-Class, will maintain its boxy silhouette and high ground clearance. It is expected to be a more modern reinterpretation of the design of the original G-Class from 1979. In particular, a short wheelbase and protruding bumper design are expected to be applied.

Although specific powertrain information has not been released, the industry expects it will likely be developed based on an electric vehicle. However, whether it will maintain the same frame body as the existing G-Class or adopt a monocoque body is still unclear.

Electric E-Class and S-Class Facelift

Mercedes-Benz is also developing an electric version of its new E-Class sedan, not just the new EQE. The model is expected to succeed the EQE and be sold alongside the existing combustion-engined E-Class. According to teaser images released, it is likely to adopt a more angular, traditional sedan design instead of the rounded form of the existing EQE.

Mercedes-Benz said the new E-Class will feature a generous wheelbase, excellent quietness, and the latest driving assistance systems. It is expected to support autonomous driving functions at L2++ and L3 levels, which will be important in securing future market competitiveness.

The S-Class, meanwhile, will receive a facelift, updating its design and technology. While the powertrain lineup, including diesel, petrol, and hybrid engines, will remain largely the same, the facelift will include more customization options via Mercedes-Benz’s high-end Manufaktur brand.

Integrated Design Strategy

Mercedes-Benz is moving towards a unified design language for both ICE and electric vehicles, similar to BMW’s recent approach. This strategy creates a consistent family look across all-electric or traditional models. This approach will be evident in the upcoming redesigned GLC, which is expected to compete with the BMW iX3 and will be built on the MB.EA platform.

Future Plans and Market Strategy

By 2027, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce 36 new models—17 electric and 19 internal combustion vehicles. By collaborating with suppliers, the company aims to reduce production costs by 10% and raw material costs, ensuring greater profitability amid increasing market competition.

In summary, Mercedes-Benz is forging a path to adapt to changing automotive trends, focusing strongly on electrification, performance, and advanced technology. The Baby G-Class and upcoming electric models like the E-Class signal the brand’s commitment to blending heritage with innovation, while the strategic cost-saving measures reflect the company’s plan for long-term sustainability.
