The Daihatsu Sigra, a compact MPV, was introduced by Daihatsu Indonesia to cater to the Indian market’s demand for eco-friendly vehicles. Built in line with Indonesia’s Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) eco-friendly initiative, the Sigra offers a practical and compact design. With a 2-3-2 seat configuration, it comfortably accommodates up to seven passengers, making it a versatile choice for families.

Daihatsu’s success with the Ayla hatchback, developed jointly with Toyota, underlined the growing demand for vehicles that meet LCGC standards. As a result, there was a noticeable increase in the demand for a low-priced minivan that could comply with the government’s environmental policies. This created an opportunity for Daihatsu to introduce the Sigra, replacing the previously sold Xenia, which did not meet the environmental criteria due to its higher engine displacement.

Sigra: A Popular Choice in the Local Market

Launched in 2016, the Sigra was developed alongside Toyota’s version, the Calya. The two models have since gained popularity in Indonesia, where affordable, seven-passenger minivans are highly sought after. Meeting the LCGC policy criteria, the Sigra enjoys various institutional benefits, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious families.

2019 Daihatsu gave the Sigra a sportier facelift, followed by more subtle exterior updates in 2022. The Sigra was recently showcased at the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2024, an event to revitalize the Indonesian automobile market. The model will remain on display until December 1, 2024.

Compact Dimensions and Efficient Powertrains

The rear door is designed to open with a hinge type. Regarding the powertrain, a 1-liter inline 3-cylinder 1KR-VE engine and a 1.2-liter inline 4-cylinder 3NR-VE engine are installed depending on the trim. The maximum output is 66 horsepower and 87 horsepower, respectively, and the maximum torque is 9.1kgf.m and 11kgfm.

Interior Design Focuses on Comfort and Space Efficiency

In terms of the interior, the configuration that maximizes the interior comfort despite its small size stands out. The gear lever and the dial knob for air conditioning control are placed on the center fascia, and a button for adjusting the side mirrors is placed next to the driver’s seat.

In the case of Sigra, it is very popular, accounting for 30% of the local sales of Daihatsu Indonesia. In particular, minivan models that accommodate multiple people are very popular in Indonesia, where the society is still centered on large families. Sigra is well-received for its stable driving feel and durability, even in Indonesia, where road conditions are not good. It has been targeting the market with its low price as its strength, with a price of 139 million rupiah (approximately $8,609).
