Despite a recent slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) sales, Volkswagen’s ID. 4 electric SUV is making waves in the EV market.

According to recent Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association data, the ID.4 continues to gain traction. In 2023, it topped the charts for European brand EV sales, with a total of 2,613 units sold. This momentum continued into February, with 375 units sold, maintaining its position as the best-selling European EV brand.

Industry analysts attribute the ID.4’s success to its performance and positive word-of-mouth from satisfied owners.

Owners praise the ID.4’s driving dynamics, which closely resemble traditional gas-powered vehicles, and its urban-optimized performance. These factors have proven crucial in winning over consumers who were on the fence about switching to electric.

The ID.4 also sets itself apart in the battery department. Unlike many imported EVs that use Chinese-made batteries, the ID.4 utilizes South Korean cells with a proven track record of reliability. This choice has resonated with safety-conscious consumers concerned about battery integrity.

The 2025 model year ID.4 has started reaching customers, boasting significant upgrades. Its new drive system delivers a substantial boost in performance and efficiency, with maximum output now at 286 horsepower and peak torque at 410 lb-ft, a 40% and 75% increase from the previous model. The EPA-estimated range on a full charge is now 424 km for the combined cycle.

The infotainment system also received a significant overhaul. The 2025 ID.4 features a 12.9-inch touchscreen with Volkswagen’s latest Discover Max interface, offering improved responsiveness and intuitive controls. The redesigned cockpit layout, including optimized button placement and gear selector, enhances overall driver ergonomics.

Competitive pricing remains a key selling point. The Pro Lite trim starts at 52.99 million KRW (about $39,743), while the Pro model is priced at 59.99 million KRW (about $44,993), representing only a slight increase of 900,000 KRW (about $675) from previous model years. Notably, the ID.4 is among the few EVs still eligible for the full 4 million KRW (about $3,000) government subsidy.

In Seoul, combining federal and local incentives can bring the effective price of the Pro Lite down to around 38 million KRW (about $28,500) and the Pro to approximately 44 million KRW (about $33,000). Some households with multiple children can receive an additional 1 million KRW (about $750) in support.
