Toyota has introduced its groundbreaking ultra-compact electric vehicle (EV) concept, the FT-Me, designed to meet the demands of urban environments.
The FT-Me is a micro-mobility vehicle that measures just 2.5 meters (about 8.2 feet) in length and weighs only 425 kg (approximately 937 lbs). It is built to maximize maneuverability in crowded city streets. With a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h), the FT-Me falls under the small, low-speed vehicles category. In some regions, it’s expected that drivers as young as 14 may be able to operate it without a license, depending on local regulations.

Distinctive Design and High Efficiency
The FT-Me features a unique design inspired by jet helmets. Its sleek black-and-white contrast and angular, boxy shape emphasize safety, sturdiness, and a lightweight structure. The vehicle has fixed LED lights on both the front and rear to improve visibility.
The vehicle’s high-efficiency drivetrain consumes three times less energy than conventional electric cars. The FT-Me can travel over 62 miles (100 km) with a single charge. A standout feature is the solar panel mounted on the roof, which can provide an additional 12-18 miles (20-30 km) of driving range per day, making it ideal for short daily commutes without recharging.

The FT-Me is designed as a two-seater to match its compact size, but the passenger seat can be removed to create additional cargo space. This area can accommodate items up to 5.2 feet (1.6 meters) long, making the vehicle suitable for personal use and ideal for urban delivery services. The FT-Me also takes up just a third of the parking space typically required for a standard car and can even be parked vertically, enhancing parking efficiency in crowded urban spaces.

Accessibility for All: A Vehicle for Wheelchair Users
One of the FT-Me’s most innovative aspects is its hand control system, which eliminates the need for traditional accelerators and brake pedals. Instead, a slider mounted on the steering wheel adjusts the speed, making it easier for individuals with disabilities or wheelchair users to drive without modifications.
The vehicle’s design also includes a wide front window and 360-degree visibility to reduce blind spots and create a safer driving experience. Additionally, the FT-Me is equipped with enhanced smartphone integration. Drivers can unlock and lock the doors using their smartphones, and by placing their phones on the dashboard, they can connect to the vehicle and access various functions.

Toyota is committed to promoting sustainable mobility and minimizing environmental impacts during vehicle production and use. The FT-Me is designed with this in mind, using recycled materials to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 90%.

Expected Price and Market Competition
The FT-Me is expected to compete with other ultra-compact electric vehicles that are gaining popularity in Europe, such as the Citroën Ami, Microlino, and Renault Mobilize Duo. Its emphasis on accessibility and sustainability has garnered significant attention in the European market.
Currently, the FT-Me is a concept vehicle. Once it enters production, it is expected to be priced under €10,000 (approximately $10,800). This price point is much lower than traditional passenger vehicles, making the FT-Me an attractive option for younger buyers purchasing their first car or those seeking an affordable second vehicle.
