The electric vehicle market is again in the spotlight as Rivian’s newly unveiled compact electric SUV, the R2, surpassed 100,000 pre-orders shortly after reservations opened.

The R2 is smaller and more competitively priced than Rivian’s previous models. It will be mass-produced in the first half of 2026.

A Strategic Model Targeting the Global Market

Rivian aims to expand its reach with the R2, targeting the U.S., European, and other global markets. RJ Scaringe, the company’s CEO, said it is optimizing manufacturing processes and implementing cost-saving measures to make Rivian EVs more accessible.

The R2 starts at $45,000, which can drop to $37,500 with available tax credits.

This makes the R2 significantly cheaper than Rivian’s larger models, such as the R1S SUV ($77,000) and the R1T pickup truck ($71,000).

The Rivian R2 retains the brand’s signature angular design while incorporating smooth curves for a bold yet refined look. It will be available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The vehicle will feature LG Energy Solution’s 4695 cylindrical cell battery, designed to maximize range and energy efficiency. However, specific range and performance details have not yet been disclosed.

Upcoming Models: Smaller R3 and Performance-Oriented R3X

Following the R2, Rivian plans to introduce a smaller electric SUV, the R3, and a sportier crossover, the R3X.

Both models will be produced at Rivian’s new Georgia plant, which will begin full-scale operations in 2028. The R3 and R3X are expected to be more agile and better suited for urban driving than Rivian’s larger vehicles.

Industry observers closely watch how the Rivian R2 will be received globally.
