Mercedes-Benz Just Put 143 Stars on a Grille—And Everyone’s Talking

On March 14, Mercedes-Benz introduced the all-new CLA, marking the model’s third generation with a complete redesign. The front now features a striking pattern of around 143 three-pointed stars, and the grille design redefines the vehicle’s exterior. Focusing on electrification, the latest CLA also integrates the latest MB OS and AI technology, positioning it as a cutting-edge compact sedan.

In a significant shift from traditional rollout sequences, Mercedes-Benz has decided to debut the CLA as an electric vehicle (EV) first. This diverges from the usual progression of internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs. Mercedes plans to introduce hybrid and gasoline versions of the CLA by 2026.

Electrification Meets Style: The CLA’s Impressive Range and Performance

The new CLA’s body size is 4,722 mm (185.9 inches) in length, 4,722 mm (185.9 inches) in length, and 2,789 mm (109.8 inches) in wheelbase, showing a larger body than the previous generation. However, based on the larger body, the first-row space has increased, but the second-row legroom has decreased slightly to 853 mm (33.6 inches) compared to the existing model. Overall, the exterior has adopted a typical coupe style.

The new CLA electric vehicle model is equipped with an 85kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides a considerable driving range of up to 792 km (492 miles) based on the WLTP standard. It is the first Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle to offer a frunk to increase storage efficiency—the frunk ( capacity is approximately 71L). The base model features a maximum output of 272 horsepower with rear-wheel drive, and the dual motors generate a total output of 354 horsepower and provide 320kW of rapid charging.

Controversial Design: The CLA’s Bold Evolution

The CLA’s design closely mirrors the concept car unveiled in October 2024, with the signature Mercedes-Benz emblem and a tightly filled grille ensuring the vehicle is instantly recognizable. Inside, the car takes technology to the next level with a wide dashboard-mounted screen that stretches across the cabin, offering a panoramic visual experience. The interior also features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch center display with the MBUX Super Screen, sports seats, and a sporty steering wheel. The trunk offers a 405-liter capacity, and the 4th-generation MBUX infotainment system provides features like AI-powered virtual assistant and ChatGPT.

Anticipation Builds for CLA’s Gasoline Models

While the electric version of the CLA has generated much excitement, the upcoming gasoline-powered models are also drawing attention. These will feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an 8-speed DCT, and a 48V mild hybrid system. A 1.3 kWh battery will supplement the powertrain, although performance and fuel efficiency details have yet to be revealed. Mercedes-Benz has promised to deliver the most efficient version of the CLA yet, fueling further anticipation for the new lineup.
