Volvo has revealed new details about its upcoming sedan, the ES90, marking a major step forward in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy.

The ES90, set to debut this Wednesday, is Volvo’s most powerful computing vehicle. Its specs enable a range of over 700 km (435 miles) on a single charge, offering impressive efficiency. Volvo is also preparing a facelift for the existing S90 and continues to refine its electrification strategy while keeping internal combustion engine (ICE) options available.

Unique Design and Advanced Platform

The ES90 retains the silhouette of Volvo’s current sedan lineup but introduces new design elements. One of the most striking features is the split taillight at the rear, which combines the main lamp along the trunk line with auxiliary LEDs on the side of the rear window. This futuristic design enhances the vehicle’s electric identity while maintaining Volvo’s signature sophistication.

The front design incorporates the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, seen initially on the EX90 SUV, helping to establish a family resemblance across Volvo’s EV lineup. Flush door handles and a low roofline maximize aerodynamic efficiency, while a LiDAR sensor on the roof improves autonomous driving capabilities.

The ES90 is built on the existing SPA2 platform, which is shared with the EX90. However, Volvo’s next-generation SPA3 platform, set to debut with the EX60 in 2026, is expected to bring further innovations. For now, the ES90 benefits from the current SPA2, which is optimized for long-range driving performance and advanced technology.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Fast Charging

The ES90 boasts groundbreaking computing performance, making it the most powerful vehicle in Volvo’s history in terms of onboard computing. It has two NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin chipsets, offering substantial processing power to support AI-based active safety systems. The car also features 26 sensors, including LiDAR, and a sophisticated monitoring system that tracks the driver’s condition.

The ES90 excels at charging. Its battery supports ultra-fast charging at 350 kW through an 800 V voltage system, allowing for a 300 km range in just 10 minutes. A full charge from 10% to 80% takes only 20 minutes, making it highly practical for long-distance travel.

Volvo also emphasizes sustainability in the ES90. The interior extensively uses recycled and eco-friendly materials, and the company plans to disclose the source of the rare metals used in its battery manufacturing, promoting transparency in its supply chain.

S90 Facelift and Continued ICE Offerings

While the ES90 leads Volvo’s electric future, the S90 sedan will continue with a major facelift planned for 2025. Recent spy shots have revealed a completely redesigned front and rear. Volvo’s strategy of gradually transitioning to electrification while offering internal combustion engine models is set to persist, allowing customers more options as the company moves toward a fully electric future.
