The G70 Just Got a Glow-Up—500 Horses, Four Pipes, and a Hybrid Twist

Genesis recently unveiled its future design direction through the X Gran Concept, which was used to render the next-generation Genesis G70 model today. This sporty sedan, finished in bold orange, emphasizes high performance while maintaining the brand’s identity. Genesis’ signature dual DRLs and crest radiator grille dominate the front, while sharply extended horizontal LED lines highlight the car’s wide stance.

The rear is also impressive. Horizontally aligned taillights follow Genesis’ signature dual lamp format, while four circular dual exhausts firmly establish its high-performance credentials. The line flowing from the hood through to the roof and tail is low and elongated, giving the car a modern interpretation of the traditional sports sedan proportions.

3,500cc Lambda Twin-Turbo and Next-Generation Hybrid System Combination

The upcoming Genesis model will feature a powertrain combining the 3,500cc Lambda twin-turbo engine and a next-generation hybrid system. This combination, integrating the electric motor with the transmission, offers efficiency and exceptional performance.

Output is expected to reach around 500 horsepower, with maximum torque approaching 70 kgf·m (515 lb-ft). This represents an increase of approximately 110 horsepower over the existing 3,500cc powertrain, ensuring robust performance for sporty driving and high-speed cruising. As a high-performance premium brand, Genesis’ Magma division will likely pursue a different direction from Hyundai’s N division, which focuses on pure driving pleasure.

Overall proportions appear sleek with a larger body for enhanced interior space

The side profile is expected to feature a long hood, short rear overhang, and a smoothly descending roofline, reminiscent of a fastback style. Sharp character lines along the lower doors add visual interest, while 21-inch wheels paired with low-profile tires enhance the performance aesthetic. The rear boasts four exhaust tips and a bold diffuser, likely to improve aerodynamics during high-speed driving. The design aims to evoke a strong performance image just by its appearance.

The next-generation model’s body size has been increased slightly to address the current G70’s rear legroom concerns. The current G70’s rear seat is sometimes uncomfortable even for women, with some questioning whether it was initially designed as a coupe rather than a sedan. The new model has a larger body size to maintain the sedan’s advantages.

Luxury Focused in the Past, Expanding into New Territory in the Future

While Genesis has historically emphasized luxury over sportiness, this sporty sedan signals a shift towards adding a high-performance identity. Competing with traditional premium performance brands like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, securing real competitive power is becoming crucial, and design aspects reflect a more aggressive approach. However, given Hyundai Motor Group’s capabilities, such performance is believed to be realistically achievable.

With the recent announcement of Hyundai’s new hybrid system, which combines high output and low emissions, this strategy is being implemented in models like the Hyundai Palisade and next-generation Kia Seltos. It is also expected to be applied to Genesis-level vehicles in the future. The automotive industry watches closely as Hyundai harmonizes design, technology, and brand identity as it develops the premium Genesis brand.
