Mercedes-Benz announced that it is developing a lidar sensor, a key component of next-generation autonomous driving technology, in collaboration with Luminar Technologies, a lidar technology developer. Luminar’s cutting-edge technology, known as the Halo sensor, boasts outstanding performance in light detection and distance measurementand will play a key role in Mercedes-Benz’s future mobility strategy.
The two companies already signed a lidar sensor supply contract two years ago. The original plan was to apply the technology to vehicles in the mid-2020s. However, this collaboration has evolved into a contract to develop a more advanced form of the Halo sensor, which is expected to debut in 2026.
Mercedes-Benz also maintains partnerships with other lidar suppliers, including Valeo. Some high-end Mercedes-Benz vehicles are currently equipped with Valeo’s lidar system, which supports limited autonomous driving.
Through this collaboration with Luminar, Mercedes-Benz plans to expand the application of advanced autonomous driving functions to various models in the future.
