Renault Korea’s Grand Koleos hybrid became a major player in the mid-size SUV segment, surpassing 33,000 units sold just seven months after its launch.

The SUV’s standout powertrain, premium interior, and competitive price point—around 30 million KRW (approximately 21,000 USD)—generated strong word-of-mouth buzz, appealing to consumers who prioritize practicality and value.

This single model led Renault Korea to sixth place among domestic automakers, marking a pivotal opportunity for Renault to rebound after years of sluggish domestic performance.

E-Tech Electrification Delivers a Smooth, Efficient Drive

A key factor in the Grand Koleos hybrid’s success is Renault’s exclusive E-Tech electrification system.

This system centers the electric motor at the center of the driving experience, offering a smooth, EV-like ride. The gas engine activates only at higher speeds or when additional power is needed, helping reduce fuel usage and ease the driving workload.

The E-Tech setup excels in urban traffic with responsive acceleration that reduces fatigue. It also uses an electrified transmission to enable stable driving with smooth gear changes and minimal shift shock.

The Grand Koleos offers strong fuel efficiency with a combined fuel economy of 15.7 km/L (36.9 mpg) and 14.5 km/L (34.1 mpg) in real-world city conditions.

Gaining Ground on Imports as Sales Keep Climbing

The popularity of the Grand Koleos has created positive momentum across Renault Korea. According to research firm Carisyou, the company’s domestic sales jumped 155% year-over-year in Q1 2025, reaching 13,814 units.

The Grand Koleos made up 11,526 units, making it the only vehicle outside of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to break into the top 20 best-selling models.

The SUV outperforms premium imports like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series. Despite some supply slowdowns due to factory upgrades in Busan, sales have stayed strong.

Given the strong domestic demand for SUVs and hybrid vehicles, the Grand Koleos is expected to maintain its momentum for the near term.

Renault Ramps Up EV Plans with Scenic and Aurora

Building on the momentum of the Grand Koleos, Renault Korea is preparing to launch a new model.

The company plans to release the all-electric Scenic in the second half of the year. The Scenic was recognized as the 2024 Car of the Year at the Geneva Motor Show. It features an estimated driving range of up to 625 km (388 miles).

Following the Scenic, Renault Korea will introduce the Aurora2, a coupe-style hybrid SUV, and the Aurora3, a fully electric SUV.

Renault Korea is also expanding its exports. Beginning with the Grand Koleos, the company has started shipments to markets with high SUV demand, including the Middle East and Latin America. In the latter half of the year, it plans to begin exports to North America, alongside the start of Polestar 4 production.
