Subaru, Japan’s leading all-wheel-drive (AWD) brand, is pushing firmly into the electric vehicle (EV) market. The updated Solterra, revealed at the New York Auto Show, features a bold exterior redesign and enhanced performance, marking Subaru’s renewed push into the competitive family electric SUV segment. The Solterra shares its platform with the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ. The earlier version was criticized for its conservative styling and underwhelming driving experience.

The new Solterra features a sharper design, extended range, and a new high-performance version offering up to 333 horsepower. Some have called it the well-rounded EV SUV buyers have been waiting for. The most noticeable change is the updated styling. Subaru has replaced the previously soft, rounded look with sharper, angular headlights and a more defined front fascia, giving the Solterra a more confident SUV presence.

A Fresh New Look
Targeting Over 356 Miles of Range

The previous horizontal grille has been replaced with a clean, closed-off panel and a thin lighting signature, giving it a look more in line with Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 than its Toyota bZ4X. At the rear, refreshed taillights and a redesigned bumper contribute to a sportier profile.

Once considered unremarkable, the redesigned Solterra is now drawing attention for its sharper, more appealing look. Many now view its design as comparable to other leading models in the segment.

The new Solterra’s upgrades go further than just the exterior. Subaru increased the battery capacity from 71.4 kWh to 74.4 kWh, resulting in an estimated EPA range of over 285 miles (459 km). That’s a 25% improvement compared to the previous version. Based on WLTP standards, the range could reach up to 356 miles (573 km), making it competitive with leading models in its class.

From Underwhelming to Standout
A Late but Strong Contender

Since its launch, the Solterra struggled to stand out. As Subaru’s first EV, it lacked distinction from the Toyota bZ4X and fell short in performance and range. This refresh addresses those shortcomings with improvements in styling, performance, and interior features.

Subaru will launch the updated Solterra in early 2026 across European markets, including the UK. The vehicle could become more competitive with its refined performance, bold new look, and larger 74.4 kWh battery. As Subaru plans to rebuild momentum with core models like the Legacy and Forester, attention is now focused on the Solterra to help sustain that momentum.

The Solterra facelift reflects Subaru’s intent to strengthen its position in the evolving EV market. It also represents a key moment for redefining Subaru’s technical and design direction. Subaru now appears ready to participate more competitively in the electric SUV space.
