Volkswagen is accelerating its shift toward electrification. Following the all-electric hatchback ID.2, the company is preparing to launch the crossover SUV version, the ID.2 X. This new model will debut at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, Germany, in September 2025.

Maintaining a design similar to the current T-Cross, the ID.2 X is expected to become a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s next-generation electric strategy in the compact SUV segment.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, recently confirmed the ID.2 X’s development, calling it a key milestone in the company’s electrification roadmap. Built on the MEB Entry platform, the model is poised to help expand Volkswagen’s EV portfolio in the future.

T-Cross-Inspired Design with Youth Appeal

The design features dynamic proportions reminiscent of the T-Cross, forming a family resemblance with the ID series.

The rendering showcases a compact yet striking appearance. The overall length is expected to be around 161.4 inches, matching the size of the T-Cross. The black cladding on the wheel arches and SUV-style bumpers at both the front and rear contribute to a robust SUV image. The slim headlights connect to a horizontal light bar, completing the futuristic front design characteristic of Volkswagen EVs. The rear design features horizontal taillights and wide fenders, creating a stable proportion. The dynamic roof line and fastback silhouette clearly illustrate a design strategy targeting younger generations. The straight character lines, large wheel arches, and high ground clearance suggest that the ID.2 X is designed to handle various driving conditions beyond city use.

The ID.2 X is based on Volkswagen’s dedicated platform for compact electric vehicles, the MEB Entry. Unlike the existing ID.3 and ID.4, this platform is designed for front-wheel drive, allowing for more spacious interiors and cargo areas. The platform also aims to enhance ride comfort and driving stability through efficient battery placement and a low center of gravity.

Affordable EV with All-Wheel Drive Potential

Given the SUV’s characteristics, higher trims of the ID.2 X may offer all-wheel drive (AWD), expanding its functionality for light off-road conditions while retaining everyday practicality. This would support Volkswagen’s goal of providing a versatile lineup with city-focused crossovers and models suitable for more varied terrains.

The ID.2 X is expected to start at around 25,000 EUR (approximately 31,000 USD), positioning it as a more accessible alternative to the EV3, which is projected to cost approximately 35,000 EUR in the European market. More detailed specifications will be released at the IAA 2025 event.

Volkswagen aims to increase its market share in Europe by offering a compact electric SUV that balances affordability and functionality with the ID.2 X. As the company accelerates its EV transition, it plans to differentiate itself through competitive pricing, brand reputation, and thoughtful design. The combination of practicality, style, and a platform optimized for electrification is expected to appeal to younger consumers.

The success of the ID.2 X could become a key indicator for Volkswagen’s broader EV strategy. Following its debut in 2025, the company intends to begin mass production and global sales in 2026, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in the compact EV segment alongside the ID.2 hatchback. It remains to be seen how Volkswagen’s efforts will resonate in Europe and the broader global electric SUV market.
