As BMW intensifies its electrification strategy, a test vehicle for the all-electric version of the high-performance M3 sports sedan was spotted at the Nürburgring in Germany. While the prototype remains in camouflage and is not yet in its final production form, its overall silhouette and front design offer early clues about what the BMW M3 electric model may look like.

Digital renderings based on them have emerged after the release of spy shots. The anticipated design, based on BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse concept, combines BMW’s recognizable styling with a modern electric vehicle look.

The Rendering Highlights a Horizontal Kidney Grille Design

One of the most noticeable updates is the revised kidney grille. The grille is vertically oriented in the current G80 M3 but takes on a horizontal and lower-profile layout in the electric version. Instead of the large air intakes essential for combustion-engine vehicles, the front features a mix of open and closed patterns, ensuring aerodynamic performance while maintaining a sleek appearance.

The headlights reinterpret BMW’s historical models, like the 2002 and E30 M3. The slim, horizontal lamp structure creates an intense look, while the daytime running light configuration emphasizes a modern electric vehicle identity. When turned off, the lights resemble a smooth glass panel, blending seamlessly with the front-end design.

Although the prototype is still covered in camouflage, its shape appears refined. While the rear lights seem narrow due to the covering, a wider taillight setup that spans the trunk area is expected, continuing themes from the Vision Neue Klasse concept.

High-Performance Identity and Expected 2027 Launch

Large air intakes—standard for M models—are placed at the bottom of the front bumper. These air intakes help cool the brakes and regulate battery temperature, contributing to performance and aerodynamic efficiency. Additional features like the carbon fiber lower diffuser and widened fender arches emphasize the car’s role as a high-performance electric model.

BMW has not officially announced a release date for the electric M3, but industry insiders expect it to launch in 2027, after the debut of the i3 sedan in 2026. The vehicle will use BMW’s Neue Klasse electric platform, which will first appear in a mid-size electric SUV about the size of the X3.

The upcoming electric BMW M3 will likely rival high-performance EVs such as the Tesla Model S Performance and Polestar 5. Though specific performance specifications haven’t been revealed yet, the vehicle is anticipated to merge the characteristic M-series driving experience with sophisticated electric powertrain technology. There’s significant industry interest in how BMW will establish this model’s place in the premium performance electric vehicle market.
