This Six-Wheeled Supercar Looks Like a Joke—Until You See What It Can Do

Supercars are often synonymous with sleek design and performance, but few can match the audacity of the Covini C6W. Produced by the small Italian manufacturer Covini, the C6W is a six-wheeled supercar that turns heads with its unusual design and boasts impressive performance to match its eccentric looks. Unlike many concept vehicles, the C6W was a mass-produced model, manufactured in small quantities over 10 years starting in 2004.

With a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine sourced from Audi, the C6W delivers 440 horsepower, putting it on par with the Lamborghini Gallardo in terms of performance. Its production, though limited, has cemented the C6W as a symbol of exception in the supercar world.

The Six-Wheel Configuration: Enhanced Traction and Stability

The first thing that stands out externally in the Covini C6W is the four front wheels. This configuration, inspired by the 1970s Formula One, is not simply a choice for visual effect. The more front tires there are, the better the grip and the more stable the driving and braking power. Covini emphasized the advantage of this structure, saying that it allows stable driving even when the tires are punctured.

The body is finished with carbon fiber and glass fiber composite materials, and the suspension adopts a double wishbone structure. This results in an excellent weight-to-power ratio of approximately 1,150 kg (2,535 pounds). In the actual driving evaluation, the response was “much more nimble than expected.” The unique sense of balance has a different charm from ordinary supercars.

Performance and Specifications

The transmission is provided as a 6-speed manual or paddle-shift automatic, and the top speed is around 300 km/h (186 mph). The acceleration time of 0-100 km/h (62 mph) is in the mid to late 4-second range, and the figures alone are comparable to those of the Gallardo and Ferrari F430. The interior is designed for two-seater seating, and the dashboard and center console reflect the sensibility of the supercars of the time.

Production Challenges and Discontinuation

The Covini C6W was produced in limited quantities for about 10 years after its official announcement in 2004. Annual production was, at most, 6 to 8 units, and the actual number of vehicles in existence was very small. For this reason, it is considered a legend among supercar collectors, and there was even a case where it was traded for $640,000.

The discontinuation of production was a combination of several factors. First, it was difficult to obtain dedicated parts and tires that fit the unique 6-wheel structure. At the time, low-profile tires that fit the specifications did not exist on the market, and maintenance costs were much higher than those of general supercars. With minimal demand and high production costs, the project naturally ended.

A Supercar Legend

Nevertheless, the Covini C6W is recorded as a model that broke the conventional wisdom that supercars must have only four wheels. This vehicle, which has taken an unusual path from design philosophy to production method and performance, is a unique model and living proof that decorates a page of Italian supercar history. Even now, someone may be quietly hiding this eccentric masterpiece in their garage.
