Hyundai’s compact electric SUV, the Casper EV—known as the Inster in Japan—is set to hit the Japanese market on April 10. The vehicle will be available in three trim levels, ranging from Casual to Lounge, with prices starting at 2,849,000 yen (approximately $19,088). Hyundai Mobility Japan reports that pre-orders have already reached 300 units.

The Casper EV delivers an impressive WLTC-rated range of 458 kilometers (approximately 285 miles) on a single charge, powered by a 49 kWh battery. This range sets a new benchmark among EVs eligible for CEV subsidies in Japan’s compact car segment. The Casper EV’s compact dimensions (3830×1610×1615mm) make it particularly well-suited for navigating Japan’s narrow urban streets and tight parking spaces, adding to its appeal in the market.

Hyundai kicked off pre-orders on January 10, well before the launch, with strong interest coming from major urban centers, including Aichi. Stronggawa, and Osaka. Buyers have favored eye-catching colors such as Buttercream Yellow Pearl, Atlas White, and Tomboy Khaki.

Hyundai Mobility Japan has reported a modest increase in sales compared to the previous year. Since re-entering the Japanese market in 2022, the company has sold just under 2,000 vehicles through 2024. However, Hyundai has expressed its ambition to increase its EV lineup and sales more than tenfold over the next five years.
