A compact SUV with a refrigerator on board? This innovative vehicle is making waves in the global EV market.

Before its official launch, Chinese automaker BYD captured industry attention with a sneak peek at its new electric SUV, the Sealion 5.

Despite being similar in size to the BMW iX1, the Sealion 5 is expected to cost about half as much. It features advanced driver assistance systems and unique elements like an in-car fridge-freezer.

The Sealion 5 is set to debut globally on March 25 in Europe and other markets, but its U.S. launch is still unconfirmed.

The Sealion 5 embodies BYD’s latest EV design in a compact SUV format. Unlike previous plug-in hybrid models, it is a fully EV.

Positioned between the Atto 3 and Sealion 7, it measures 4,520 mm (178 inches) in length, 1,860 mm (73.2 inches) in width, and 1,630 mm (64.2 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm (107.5 inches). These dimensions make it challenging to find a direct comparison in the market.

The cabin features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen. Standard amenities include wireless phone charging and a column-mounted shifter. The voice-controlled in-car fridge-freezer is a standout feature that enhances convenience and user experience.

The exterior reflects BYD’s new design language and is available in four color options.

323-Mile Range and Advanced God’s Eye ADAS

The Sealion 5 has two lithium iron phosphate battery options: 50 kWh and 60.9 kWh. These deliver ranges of 430 km (267 miles) and 520 km (323 miles), respectively, under China’s CLTC standards. It supports 150 kW fast charging for quick recharging.

Depending on the trim, the rear-wheel-drive powertrain offers either 188 or 215 horsepower, providing solid performance for city and highway driving.

A key highlight is BYD’s new advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), “God’s Eye.” It monitors its surroundings using three front cameras, 12 cameras, five millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Combined with AI navigation and voice recognition, the system supports future autonomous driving features.

Competitive Pricing Could Shake Up the Market

The Sealion 5’s pricing is drawing significant attention. Chinese reports suggest a price range of 115,000 to 150,000 CNY (approximately $15,800 to $20,700), about half the cost of rivals like the Genesis GV60 or BMW iX1.

Analysts believe Sealion 5’s lower price point could disrupt the electric SUV market.

BYD plans to introduce several EVs this year, including the Seal, Dolphin, and Sealion 7. Industry watchers and consumers are keeping a close eye on what comes next.
