Among traditional automakers, BMW stands out as one of the brands most actively responding to the shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) and future technologies. Its current lineup, featuring models like the i4, i5, and iX, has received high praise for performance and efficiency. Meanwhile, BMW’s plug-in hybrid models are showing consistent growth. However, BMW has hinted at even more innovative changes on the horizon.

The core of this transformation is the Neue Klasse lineup, a modern take on the brand’s classic New Classic models from the 1960s and 1970s. This new EV lineup promises to outperform current EVs that utilize existing internal combustion engine platforms regarding driving range, software, performance, and efficiency.

This week, BMW unveiled the first models of the new Neue Klasse: the sedan i3 (NA0) and the SUV iX3 (NA5).

The iX3 will debut globally at the IAA Mobility show in September. While the SUV’s name has been officially confirmed, the sedan is expected to follow a similar naming convention. During its annual investor conference, BMW announced that the fully electric iX3 will debut at the IAA Mobility show in Munich this September. They stated that the iX3 will lead the new driving experience, electrification, and digitalization that BMW aims to achieve.

BMW plans to start production of the iX3 in Hungary by the end of this year, and additional models based on the same platform will follow.

All Neue Klasse models, including the iX3, will be developed as Software Defined Vehicles. Over-the-air software updates can enhance many vehicle functions, allowing smartphone integration and continuous feature upgrades.

BMW revealed that the new platform uses approximately 600 meters less wiring than existing EVs, reducing weight and increasing efficiency. The vehicles will feature four “Super Brain” units and a “Heart of Joy” power control system—names that may sound poetic but are essential for determining the performance of BMW’s next-generation EVs.

BMW has not yet disclosed detailed performance information, such as battery capacity and charging speed. Still, they announced that the Neue Klasse models will provide a minimum driving range of over 600 km according to European WLTP standards.

Additionally, the Neue Klasse models will implement an 800V voltage system, reducing charging time by up to 30% compared to BMW’s current EV lineup.

BMW is currently conducting extreme weather testing for the iX3, putting it through rigorous trials in both scorching deserts and icy conditions. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said that these tests will ensure top-tier performance under all driving conditions.

BMW continues to experience steady growth in the EV market, with the new Neue Klasse models expected to accelerate this momentum further. The iX3 is poised to become a key revenue model for BMW’s EV lineup. The debut of the i3 sedan, which carries on the legacy of the 3 Series in the EV era, has also generated significant anticipation.

As BMW leads the EV market, all eyes are on whether the iX3 and i3 will surpass existing internal combustion engine-based models with their innovative electric features. The iX3, set to be unveiled in Munich this September, along with additional Neue Klasse models, is expected to transform BMW’s EV strategy.
