Tesla to Introduce 5G Modems for Faster, Smarter Cars

Tesla is set to introduce 5G-enabled modems to boost cellular connectivity in its vehicles. The company’s latest models—Model Y, Cybertruck, and the new Model 3—are expected to feature these advanced 5G modems, replacing existing LTE (4G) modems.

Next-Gen 5G Communication Module Integration

A new TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT—TCU—GEN II modem was recently spotted in Tesla’s electronic parts catalog (EPC) by renowned Tesla hacker Green, who shared the finding on X. As soon as supplies become available, this upgraded modem is likely to be installed in new vehicles.

Significant Speed Boost

Users can expect dramatically improved speeds in areas with active 5G networks. The new modem will support maximum speeds of up to 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps), a substantial upgrade from the previous LTE modem’s top speed of 100 Mbps.

Updates for the New Model Y

The new Model Y could be equipped with the LTE-based Gen I modem or the 5G-capable Gen II modem. It is unclear which modem will be installed in individual vehicles before delivery. Green confirmed that both modem types are valid configurations for the Model Y.

Retrofit Possibilities and Service Support

Tesla currently sells parts directly to customers; however, the pricing of LTE- and 5G-supported TCUs has not yet been disclosed. These devices require programming by Tesla service centers or qualified technicians and must be paired with a SIM card linked to the vehicle’s VIN.

Although the hardware swap itself is relatively straightforward, vehicle owners are unlikely to be able to perform the upgrades themselves. Tesla may offer 5G modem retrofit services in the future. Pricing and implementation timelines remain uncertain, as supply seems limited for now.

Enhanced Vehicle Connectivity and Potential Starlink Integration

The introduction of 5G modems underscores Tesla’s ongoing commitment to improving cellular connectivity in its vehicles. While there are currently no confirmed plans for direct Starlink support, Tesla may incorporate satellite-based connectivity technology into its cars in the future. For now, a mini Starlink, which can be mounted on Tesla’s glass roofs, is emerging as an option.
